  A

In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics(策略).

One tactic involves where to display the goods. Foe example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk foodlater in their trip. In department stores, the women’s shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics section:while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later.

Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers’ senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wine went up.

When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these million houses.

23.What is the California builder’s story intended to prove?

  A. The house structure is a key factor customers consider.

  B. The more costly the house is, the better it sells.

学习啦在线学习网 D. A good first impression increases sales.

学习啦在线学习网 24.What is the main purpose of the passage?

There are many places to go on safariin Africa, but riding a horse through the flooded waters of Botswana's Okavango Delta must rank as one of the world's most exciting wildlife journeys.

Several safari camps operate as the base for this adventure, providing unique rides twice a day to explore deep into the delta. The camps have excellent horses, professional guides and lots of support workers. They have a reputation for providing a great riding experience.

学习啦在线学习网 The morning ride, when the guides take you to beautiful, shallow lakes full of water lilies, tends to be more active. It is unlike any other riding experience. With rainbows forming in the splashing water around you and the sound of huge drops of water bouncing off your body and face. It is truly exciting. You are very likely to come across large wild animals, too. On horseback it is possible to get quite close to elephants, giraffes and many other animals. The sense of excitement and tension levels rise suddenly though, as does your heart rate, as you move closer to them.

学习啦在线学习网 In the evening, rides are usually at a more relaxed and unhurried pace. With golden light streaming across the grassy delta and the animals coming out to eat and drink. Sedate though they are, rides at this time of day are still very impressive. As the sun's rays pass through the dust kicked up by the horses, the romance of Africa comes to life.

Back at the camp you can kick off your boots and enjoy excellent food and wine. Looking back on your day, you will find it hard to deny that a horseback Safari is as close as you will ever come to answering the call of the wild.

学习啦在线学习网 The values of artistic works, according to cultural relativism(相对主义), are simply reflections of local social and economic conditions. Such a view, however, fails to explain the ability of some works of art to excite the human mind across cultures and through centuries.

History has witnessed the endless productions of Shakespearean plays in every major language of the world. It is never rare to find that Mozart packs Japanese concert halls, as Japanese painter Hiroshige does Paris galleries. Unique works of this kind are different from today’s popular art, even if they began as works of popular art. They have set themselves apart in their timeless appeal and will probably be enjoyed for centuries into the future.

In a 1757 essay, the philosopher David Hume argued that because“the general principles of taste are uniform(不变的) in human nature,”the value of some works of art might be essentially permanent. He observed that Homer was still admired after two thousand years. Works of this type, he believed, spoke to deep and unvarying features of human nature and could continue to exist over centuries.

Now researchers are applying scientific methods to the study of the universality of art. For example, evolutionary psychology is being used by literary scholars to explain the long-lasting themes and plot devices in fiction. The structures of musical pieces are now open to experimental analysis as never before. Research findings seem to indicate that the creation by a great artist is as permanent an achievement as the discovery by a great scientist.

28.According to the passage, what do we know about cultural relativism?

A.It introduces different cultural values.B.It explains the history of artistic works.

C.It relates artistic values to local conditions.D.It excites the human mind throughout the world.

学习啦在线学习网 29.In Paragraph 2, the artists are mentioned in order to show that .

学习啦在线学习网 A.great works of art can go beyond national boundaries

B.history gives art works special appeal to set them apart

C.popular arts are hardly distinguishable from great arts

D.great artists are skilled at combining various cultures

30.According to Hume, some works of art can exist for centuries because .

学习啦在线学习网 A.they are results of scientific study

学习啦在线学习网 B.they establish some general principles of art

C.they are created by the world’s greatest artists

学习啦在线学习网 D.they appeal to unchanging features of human nature

学习啦在线学习网 31.Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?

A.Are Artistic Values Universal? B.Are Popular Arts Permanent?

学习啦在线学习网 C.Is Human Nature Uniform? D.Is Cultural Relativism Scientific?

  D

学习啦在线学习网 Suppose you become a leader in an organization. It’s very likely that you’ll want to have volunteers to help with the organization’s activities. To do so, it should help to understand why people undertake volunteer work and what keeps their interest in the work.

学习啦在线学习网 Let’s begin with the question of why people volunteer. Researchers have identified several factors that motivate people to get involved. For example, people volunteer to express personal values related to unselfishness, to expand their range of experiences and to strengthen social relationships. If volunteer positions do not meet those needs, people may not wish to participate. To select volunteers, you may need to understand the motivations of the people you wish to attract.

学习啦在线学习网 People also volunteer because they are required to do so. To increase levels of community service, some schools have launched compulsory volunteer programmes. Unfortunately, these programmes can shift people’s wish of participation from an internal factor (e.g. “I volunteer because it’s important to me”) to an external factor (e.g. “I volunteer because I’m required to do so”) When that happens, people become less likely to volunteer in the future. People must be sensitive to this possibility when they make volunteer activity a must.

Once people begin to volunteer, what leads them to remain in their positions over time? To answer this question, researchers have conducted follow-up studies in which they track volunteers over time. For instance, one study followed 238 volunteers in Florida over a year. One of the most important factors that influenced their satisfaction as volunteers was the amount of suffering they experienced in their volunteer positions. Although this result may not surprise you, it leads to important practical advice. The researchers note that attention should be given to “training methods that would prepare volunteers for troublesome situations or provide them with strategies for coping with the problem they do experience.”

Another study of 302 volunteers at hospitals in Chicago focused on individual differences in the degree to which people view “volunteer” as an important social role. It was assumed that those people for whom the role of volunteer was most part of their personal identity would also be more likely to continue volunteer work. Participants indicated the degree to which the social role mattered by responding to statements such as “Volunteering inHospital is an important part of who I am.” Consistent with the researchers’ expectations, they found a positive correlation(正相关) between the strength of role identity and the length of time people contributed to volunteer. These results, once again, lead to concrete advice. “Once an individual begins volunteering, continued efforts might focus on developing a volunteer role identity…Items like T-shirts that allow volunteers to be recognized publicly for their contributions can help strengthen role identity.”

学习啦在线学习网 32. People volunteer mainly out of__________.

  A. academic requirements B. social expectations C. financial rewards D. internal needs

  33. What can we learn from the Florida study?

  A. Follow-up studies should last for one year. B. Volunteers should get mentally prepared.

  C. Strategy training is a must in research. D. Volunteers are provided with concrete advice.

  34. What is most likely to motivate volunteers to continue their work?

学习啦在线学习网 A. Individual differences in role identity. B. Publicly identifiable volunteer T-shirts.

学习啦在线学习网 C. Role identity as a volunteer. D. Practical advice from researchers.

  第二节作文范文

学习啦在线学习网 Basically, the relationship among us students ,our family ,classmates as well as teachers is good. However, there exist some problems. Some students in our school lose their temper easily because of anxiety or study burden. What’s worse, they sometimes quarrel with others, and even turn a deaf ear to their parents and teachers, which is very disappointing.

In my opinion, we students should make every effort to improve the situation. First, we show trust to our parents out of respect and have a heart-to-heart talk with them, if possible. Second, when we are feeling upset, we can communicate more with our friends or teachers. It is likely that they can understand us better and give us some reasonable advice.
