It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the United States has entered a brand new age, because Donald Trump, the country’s 45th president, is very different from any president before him.

Unlike Hilary Clinton, his opponent, and most previous US presidents, who entered the election after years of being politicians,Trump,70,was a New York real estate (房地产) businessman. And he was not a presidential candidate who worked hard to keep a perfect public image of a man always caring, fair and intelligent.

Instead, Trump has a reputation of being short-tempered, self-centered and hateful toward those who disagree with him. He also blames immigrants, both from Latin America and the Middle East.

But to his supporters, Trump is not a typical politician, which is actually one of his advantages.“We have seen our country take a downturn in the eyes of the world. We need to go in a different direction,” Binyomin Weisswasser,39,from Chicago, told the Chicago Tribune.“ Trump’s not a politician ...I like that he is not always politically correct and speaks his mind. It gives me the feeling that what you see is what you get. You may not like it, but you know what it is.”

Interestingly, many who voted for Trump actually followed the “lesser of two evils” principle — one that people use when faced with picking from two unpleasant options — simply because they didn’t think Clinton was a better choice.

学习啦在线学习网 “He’s the candidate I disagree less with,” Jack Stucky, 20, a student at Northwestern University, told the Chicago Tribune.“ I don’t think I’d say Trump is going to be the best president ever, but I did think he’d be better than Hilary Clinton.”

学习啦在线学习网 25.What is the main purpose of the passage?

学习啦在线学习网 A. To predict what changes Donald Trump would bring to the US.

  B. To report on people’s different reactions to Trump’s win in the election.

  C. To explore the advantages Donald Trump had over Hilary Clinton.

学习啦在线学习网 D. To analyze Donald Trump and the reasons for his victory in the presidential election.

  26. According to the text, compared with Hilary Clinton, Donald Trump _______.

  A. cares more about keeping his public image perfect

学习啦在线学习网 B. is believed to be more experienced and flexible in politics

  C. is considered more straight for ward and trustworthy

学习啦在线学习网 D. holds a more tolerant attitude toward immigrants

27.According to the text, many who voted for Trump .

  A. believed he would be the best president ever

学习啦在线学习网 B. expected him to lead the US out of its downturn

  C. were convinced that he would be always politically correct

  D. felt that he was more fair and intelligent than Hilary Clinton

  C

学习啦在线学习网 Whenever seeing a button, we are eager to press it because we know something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example on a doorbell and on the “on/off” button on the TV. But some buttons are actualy fake, like the “close” button on an elevator.

学习啦在线学习网 Many people like pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the patience to wait for the elevator doors to shut. But according to Karen W. Penafiel , executive director of the US’ National Elevator Industry Inc., elevators’ “close” buttons are a complete trap, at least in the US — the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press.

学习啦在线学习网 In the 1990s, the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, making sure all elevators stayed open long enough for people with disabilities to enter. Only US firefighters and maintenance workers can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys.

But to normal elevator riders, the buttons aren’t completely useless. Fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.

“Perceived (能够感知的)control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being,” Ellen J.L anger, a psychology professor, told The Times, adding that a lack of control is associated with depression .

Experts have revealed that a lot of buttons that don’t do anything exist in our

学习啦在线学习网 lives for this same purpose.

For example, many offices in the US have fake the rmostats(恒温器)because people tend to feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workspace.

学习啦在线学习网 “That habit is here to stay,” John Kounios, a psychology professor, told The Times.“Even though I have real doubts about the traffic light buttons, I always press them. After all, I’ve got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not press the button on the off chance that this one will work?”

28.What is the best title of the passage?

学习啦在线学习网 A. Different kinds of fake buttons

  B. Different functions of fake buttons

学习啦在线学习网 C. People’s different habits when pushing buttons

学习啦在线学习网 D. Advantages and disadvantages of fake buttons

29.In America, the “close” buttons on elevators___.

学习啦在线学习网 A. work only when people press them hard for a while

  B. cannot speed up the process of closing the door in any circumstance

  C. are fake for the convenience of disabled people

  D. were specially designed to give people a sense of control

30.The underlined part “for this same purpose” in Paragraph 6 refers to _____.

  A. giving people perceived control

  B. making people more patient

学习啦在线学习网 C. helping people to build up confidence

  D. making people with depression feel better

31.According to John Kounios, people who press fake buttons__________.

学习啦在线学习网 A. probably have such a habit

学习啦在线学习网 B. should give up this habit

  C. consider what they do to be meaningless

  D. don’t know that what they press is fake

  D

“Microbots” smaller than the width of a human hair could be highly effective and cost-efficient tools for removing lead and other pollutants from industrial wastewater, according to a new study published in the journal Nano Letters last month. In the space of a single hour, the study showed the microbots could remove up to 95 percent of lead from water.

学习啦在线学习网 Lead is commonly found in wastewater from mines or factories that make batteries and electronic devices, and can cause a serious risk to public health, as the water crisis in Flint, Michigan shows. Industrial activities can also contaminate water with arsenic(砷), mercury (汞)and other metals.

学习啦在线学习网 Heavy metal pollution can cost big cities billions of dollars a year, said Samuel Sanchez, co-author of the study and ICREA professor at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia in Spain. He added that current methods of treating the pollution either are expensive or produce secondary waste.

Sanchezs said his team imagined using the microbots “for the pre-treatment of industrial wastewater before dumping into a river”. The microbots have three layers. The outer layer is made of some thing that absorbs heavy metals, while a middle layer makes the microbots ferro-magnetic(铁磁性的)so that they can be directed by external magnets. An inner layer reacts when hydrogen peroxide(双氧水)is dded to the wastewater, producing a stream of oxygen micro-bubbles that the microbots eject(喷射)to push themselves in the water. Once the bots finish their clean-up work, external magnets collect them for reuse. The heavy metal pollutants can also be recycled, making the process even more efficient.

学习啦在线学习网 “This technique can be helpful, so we imagine that small companies can use microbots to deal with their water in case they can’t afford to bring their waste water to plants that handle polluted water,” Sanchezs said.“In my opinion, we should see first commercial use of self-driven microbots in the next couple of years.”

学习啦在线学习网 32.The microbots are created mainly to______

  A. remove heavy metals in rivers

  B. help residents drink cleaner water

  C. remove heavy metals from industrial wastewater

  D. remove different heavy metals from water

学习啦在线学习网 33.What does the underlined word” contaminate” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

  A. Circulate B. Pollute C. Surround D. Pour

34.What Samuel Sanchez said in Paragraph 3 mainly implies that____.

  A. there is no way to treat pollution

  B. it’s really costly to treat water pollution

  C. heavy metal pollution is a serious problem in big cities

学习啦在线学习网 D. cost-efficient tools for treating water pollution are important

  35.What’sthefunctionofhydrogenperoxideintheprocess?

  A. To help the microbots move.

  B. To work as external magnets

  C. To reduce oxygen micro-bubbles

学习啦在线学习网 .D. To make the microbots ferromagnetic.
