My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s (老年痴呆症)last summer. Suddenly, it was difficult for me to accept that the roles were now reversed---my mother became my child, and I became her mother. I became impatient, argued with her, once I even yelled at her. Gradually, I was used to this kind of life. Now I am able to deal with her and the situation better. I have learned a lot of life lessons from the experience.
学习啦在线学习网 My mother reacts very sensitively to my feelings. That is typical of Alzheimer’s patients. When I visit her, feeling hectic and tense, she reacts immediately, takes on my mood, and becomes nervous and negative. But when I cheerful and attentive, she is happy. This has taught me to pay more attention to my own feelings when I am with other people.
I always thought I was very tolerant, but in reality, my tolerance ran out as soon as someone turned away from what I considered “right”. With my mother I can now really be tolerant. Through her illness she has developed a childlike tactlessness. Eating out in restaurants, for example, is a bit embarrassing when she shouts at the waiter that the food is so bad or talks about people at the next table in a loud voice. Of course I make sure that my mother doesn’t offend anyone, but I’ve stopped complaining about others and have become more tolerant.
I have also learned that everything has special value. When my mother got sick I didn’t want to burden my two daughters with it. They are young and have enough going on with their education, and starting their careers. I felt that it was simply my job as my mother’s daughter. The most wonderful discovery I’ve made through my mother’s disease may be that my children not only offer to help me when they sense that I’m feeling overwhelmed, but that they take care of my mother on their own initiative. They visit her often, play cards with her, and look at photo albums together with her. It shows me that it’s all worth it.
学习啦在线学习网 21. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. How I Cared for My Sick Mother
学习啦在线学习网 B. What I Have Learned from Alzheimer’s
C. How I Became More Tolerant
D. Why I Am Feeling Overwhelmed
22. Which of the following is common behavior of Alzheimer patients?
A. Being sensitive to others’ moods B. Being curious about everything
C. Being afraid of strange people D. Being particular about clothes
23. We can infer that the writer’s daughters are ________.
学习啦在线学习网 A. considerate B. selfish C. traditional D. naughty
B
Let us begin by saying what does not cause our dreams. Our dreams do not come from “another world”. They are not messages from outside source. They are not a look into the future, either. All our dreams have something to do with our feelings, fears, longings, wishes, needs and memories. But something on the “outside” may affect what we dream. if a person is hungry, or tired or cold, his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket, have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping or resting on the ice or snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experience you have today.
学习啦在线学习网 So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has effects on you while you are sleeping (feeling of cold, a noise, a discomfort, etc.) and it may also use your past experiences and the wishes and interests you have now. This is why children are likely to dream of fairies, older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, home-sick soldiers of their families and prisoners of freedom.
学习啦在线学习网 To show you how this is happening while you are asleep and how your needs and wishes can all be joined together in a dream, here is the story of an experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbed cotton. He would dream he was in hospital and his charming girlfriend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling his hands gently!
There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanations of dreams, though a bit reasonable, are not accepted by everyone, but they offer an interesting approach to the problem. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that do not come true. In other words, a dream is a way of having your wishes carried out.
学习啦在线学习网 24. What do we learn from the first paragraph?
学习啦在线学习网 A. One can predict what may happen in the future through dreams

C. When you feel very tired, you may fall asleep quickly without having any dreams at all
D. Our dreams can be related to anything but past experiences

学习啦在线学习网 A. They feel uncomfortable while they are sleeping
学习啦在线学习网 B. They have seen such fairies in their dreams before
C. They have a very strong desire to see such fairies
D. Such fairies may bring them good luck in their examinations
26. What influenced the man’s dream according to the experiment described in this passage?
A. Both outside and inside factors
学习啦在线学习网 B. His fear of an operation

D. The hospital in which he was treated
27. The explanation of dreams that some scientists give ____________.

学习啦在线学习网 D. has been proved by the findings of their studies
C
学习啦在线学习网 Parents of pupils at Greasley primary school are ranked from A to D based on their involvement with their children’s education. The system is intended to improve the children’s performance at school by encouraging their parents to attend events and help with learning at home. For many children at this school, it’s making a huge difference. Children of parents in groups A and B make significantly better progress than those whose parents are in groups C and D, but the system ensures that less-engaged parents are productively supported by the school.
Not all parents are in favor of being graded. “They’ll have us all wearing dunce’s hats. It’s one thing when your child gets a bad grade, but now they openly embarrass their parents too,” said a mother-of-one, who did not wish to be named.
Another mother argued that the move had unfairly shifted responsibility from teachers to parents. Those parents who work nine to five won’t have time to have as much input as, say, stay-at-home mums who have the time to contribute more and go to more school events.
学习啦在线学习网 But Pat Walker, 63, whose eight-year-old granddaughter attends the school, thinks it’s very beneficial to the pupils and the parents and the grandparents as well.
学习啦在线学习网 The headmistress, Donna Chambers, came up with the system after becoming “frustrated with some parents’ unwillingness to support their children in school. She said the most difficult part of the project had been having hour long conversations with parents who the school believed could be doing more. That one hour conversation will promote the child’s academic life.
Greasley primary school caters for 346 pupils, aged 4 to 11, and was rated “good” by Office for Standards in Education at its last inspection this year. Ms Chambers said, “Between 15 percent and 20 percent of parents started out in the lower categories, but now that has been reduced to just 2 percent.”
学习啦在线学习网 28. The purpose of the school grading parents is for parents to_________.
A. be informed of the school events
学习啦在线学习网 B. offer their children more support
学习啦在线学习网 C. do more homework for their children
D. apply to the school for more children

学习啦在线学习网 Put your retirement plants delayed. Chances are, sooner or later, you could move further than you were thinking, to as far as Mars. Next Monday, to mark the launch of its new documental drama Mars, National Geographic will display the first ever Mars showhome(样板房), revealing what life could look life on the Red Planet.
The igloo shaped showhome is set in the year 2037 in a vast system of valleys on the Mars equator, and it will be built using recycled spacecraft parts and bricks made of Martian soil. Some parts are recognizable—kitchen, bedroom—but there are key differences that are vital for human survival. As the Martian atmosphere is about one hundredth as thick as the Earth’s, society will move largely indoors. Most buildings will be connected by underground tunnels(隧道). The houses won’t have windows, but natural light can still be used. Walls will need to be 10 to 12 feet thick to protect people from dangerous space rays, and a double air-locked entrance will keep the home maintaining a certain pressure.
学习啦在线学习网 “This is not a story of sci-fi. We’ve had the technology for 30 years, but we haven’t had the will. But two main factors have completely changed public attitudes. The private companies’ involvement has forced government agencies to up their game, and influential films, such as Gravity and the Martian, have caught society’s eye,” says Stephen Petranek, author of How We’ll Live on Mars, “Manger Elon Musk aims to land people on Mars by 2024 and intends to send 80,000 people to it by 2050. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is working on a similar plan. I think we will create a very livable and likeable environment. It’s not terrifying. It’s kind of glorious.”

学习啦在线学习网 Freezing weather can mean frostbite and hypothermia(体温过低)unless a person is well prepared. Today we talk about how to stay warm, dry and safe.
学习啦在线学习网 Frostbite is damage that happens when skin is exposed to extreme cold for too long. It mainly happens on the hands, feet, nose and ears. People with minor cases of frostbite that affect only the skin may not suffer and permanent damage. 36 If blood vessels(血管)are damaged, people can suffer a more serious infection. Sometimes the only way doctors can treat an injury like this is to remove frostbitten areas like fingers and toes.
学习啦在线学习网 37 Signs of hypothermia include uncontrollable shaking, very slow breathing and difficulty thinking clearly. It can lead to death if the person does not receive help.
学习啦在线学习网 To avoid cold-related injuries, here is a simple way to remember four basic steps to stay warm, Think of COLD-C.O.L.D.
C stands for cover. 38 .And wear mittens instead of gloves. In gloves, the fingers are separated, so the hands may not stay as warm as they would in mittens.
O stands for overexertion. Avoid activities that will make you sweaty. Wet clothes and cold weather are a dangerous combination.
L is for layers. Wearing loose, lightweight clothes, one layer on top of another, is better than wearing a single heavy layer of clothing. 39
D is for dry. In other words, stay as dry as possible. Pay attention to the places where snow can enter clothing. These include the tops of boots, the necks of coats and the wrist areas of gloves.
学习啦在线学习网 And last here are two other things to keep in mind---one for children and the other for adults. Eating snow might be fun for kids but it lowers the body’s temperature. 40 But what it really does is weaken the body’s ability to hold heat.
A. Try to get advice from experts about what to do and what not to do in cold weather.
学习啦在线学习网 B. Wear a hat and scarf to keep from escaping through the head, neck and ears.
学习啦在线学习网 C. And for adults drinking alcohol might make them feel warm.
D. But if deeper tissue(肌肉组织)is affected, a person is likely to feel pain every time the area gets cold.
