It was an extremely hot day. My younger brother Walt and I had decided to go swimming in the stream behind Mr Blickez’s house, because it would be the only way to cool ourselves down. Across his farm and through some woods was a deep swimming hole supplied by several cold springs(泉).
The only problem with our plan was that this farm was guarded by a huge mean Hereford bull(公牛). Mr Blickez had told us that Elsie, the animal’s name, was the meanest bull in town, maybe even the county, and we believed in him. But the hotter it got, the more we thought there was reason to doubt about what he said. For one thing, we remembered Mr Blickez liked telling tall tales; for another, Elsie seemed like a strange name for a bull. Finally, I talked Mom into asking permission for us to walk through the farm, and Mr Blickez finally agreed.
学习啦在线学习网 On our way across the farm, we stopped at the fence to admire the swimming hole. The sun shone brightly across the cool waters. We couldn’t wait to get there. Suddenly, Walt shouted loudly. Elsie had run to him and was licking(舔) his back. I immediately hid under the fence. However, when I looked up, I saw that Elsie wasn’t a big mean bull at all. She was just a friendly young cow, and she was going to keep licking my brother’s back as long as he stood still.
When we discovered the tr uth, we were so happy. We then ran to the swimming hole and jumped in. The water was just as wonderful as we had dreamed. After that day, we had many good days and we often visited our secret swimming hole guarded by the so-called “big mean bull”.

The King's School, Canterbury is an independent, coeducational secondary school. There are currently 791 pupils on the school roll(名单). The school has a long and distinguished history, and it is also one of the oldest charities in the country, providing scholarships to pupils and organizing a Charity of the Term.
The curriculum(课程) at King's is based on strong academic roots. It emphasizes and relies upon what is best in traditional independent school education: scholarly excellence supported by a caring and tutorial system, and a wideranging cocurricular programme. However, it is continually adapting and reacting to the changing demands of modern education: new subjects are added, new teaching techniques are adopted, and there is an increasing awareness of the need to provide programmes of study that match individual needs and skills.
The curriculum is divided into three units: the Lower School(Year 9 ), an introductory year; the Middle School(Years 10 and 11 ), working to GCSEs; and the Sixth Form(Years 12 and 13), taking AS and A levels.
学习啦在线学习网 Full details can be found in: Shell Guide and Handbook; Middle School Academic Guide 2009—2011; Middle School Academic Guide 2010—2012; Sixth Form Guide 2009—2011 and Sixth Form Guide 2010—2012.
学习啦在线学习网 Formal and structured educational support, for those who need it, is available at all levels. The wellstocked library is open 7 days and 6 evenings per week. ICT facilities (including the Internet) are available for all and the whole school(studies within the houses as well as classrooms) is extensively networked.
Pupils are offered extensive career advice throughout their time at King's. Almost all go to university, either immediately or following a GAP year. The most popular university destinations are Cambridge, Bristol, Nottingham, Durham, Leeds, Oxford, Edinburgh, Manchester, and University College, London.

In the college-admission(大学入学考试)wars, we parents are the true fighters. We are pushing our kids to get good grades, take SAT preparatory courses and build resumes(简历)so they can get into the college of our first choice. In our eyes, a degree from Stanford or Princeton is the ticket for life. We see our kids’ college background as something showing how well or how poorly we’ve raised them. But we don’t realize we are selfish. We think more about ourselves than the kids.
It’s true getting into college has generally become tougher because the number of high school graduates has grown. We suffer great anxiety; we worry there won’t be enough honors to show off. Fearful parents urge their children to apply to more schools than ev er. We hold the belief that graduates of best universities must enjoy more success because they get a better education. All that is seemingly acceptable—and mostly wrong.
学习啦在线学习网 “We haven’t found any convincing evidence that a prestigious(有名望的)college matters,”says Ernest T. Pascarella of the University of Iowa, co-author of “How College Affects Students”, an 827-page report of hundreds of studies of the college experience.
According to some studies, graduates of prestigious schools do earn much money. But even this seems like just a coincidence.
学习啦在线学习网 Kids count more than their colleges. Getting into Yale may mean intelligence, talent and ambition. But there are many other things that are equally important. The reason:so many similar people go elsewhere. Getting into college isn’t life’s only competition. In the next competition, the results may change. Princeton economists Alan Krueger studied admissions to one top Ph.D.program. High scores on the GRE helped explain who got in;degrees of prestigious universities didn’t .
学习啦在线学习网 So, parents, lighten up. America is a competitive society; our kids need to adjust to that but too much pushiness can be destructive. The very ambition we place on our children may get some into Harvard but may also set them up for disappointment. They may have been so accustomed to being on top that anything less disappoints them.
学习啦在线学习网 32. Why are parents the true fighters in the college-admission wars?
A. They have to do many things for their children.
B. They care more about the results than their children.
学习啦在线学习网 C. They decide which university their children are to attend.
D. They know better about the universities than their children.
33. The author may agree with the idea that .
A. kids suffer greater anxiety than their parents.
B. entering a good university means a high income.
学习啦在线学习网 C. getting into college is becoming more and more difficult.
D. kids should apply to more schools to enter a prestigious university.
34. Krueger’s study shows degrees of prestigious universities .
A. are not welcomed by Ph.D.programs B. show little about one’s intelligence
学习啦在线学习网 C. mean low GRE scores D. guarantee no success
学习啦在线学习网 35. Pushing children into prestigious universities may make them .
学习啦在线学习网 A. lose their interest in study easily B. earn less than they have expected
C. experience more dissatisfaction. D. become less competitive in the job market

Dear friends,
I am Li Ming, president of the Students’ Union. I am writing to call on you to give up smoking.
Some students in our school have been caught smoking, which has become a cause of concern. Medical studies show that smoking is harmful to our health because of the poisonous chemicals produced when cigarettes are burning. Both smokers and non-smokers are affected by the poisonous matter. So the number of people who suffer from lung cancer and other breathing-related diseases has been on the increase. Therefore, smokers should give up this bad habit as soon as possible.
Let’s develop a healthy lifestyle! Let’s take action from now on!
