“What’s that?” my ten-year-old daughter, Genie, asked. She’d caught me laughing at a piece of mail I’d just opened. “Wake-up service; $2.50 per call.” At the bottom was a phone number and a drawing of a rotary phone, like the one my great-aunt Sara had owned 40 years ago.
学习啦在线学习网 “Is that mail funny?” Genie asked.
学习啦在线学习网 “Not really,” I admitted. “It’s just outdated.”
“Who sent this flyer(传单)?” she pressed.
学习啦在线学习网 “Probably someone older,” I said, “and could use some money.”
Her eyes lit up. “Can we order a wake-up?” she asked.
学习啦在线学习网 “We don’t need it.” I picked it up and headed for the recycling bin.
学习啦在线学习网 “Wait!” she screamed. “I feel sorry for the wake-up man, if he needs some money,” she said, tearing up. “Can’t we order?”
学习啦在线学习网 I looked at the flyer with its drawing of a rotary phone. I remembered, again, my great-aunt Sara and her rotary phone. As a kid, I’d visited her over Labor Day, when Jerry Lewis would host his charity event for the disabled kids. Aunt Sara would squeeze my hand, then reach for the rotary phone, dialing the number on the screen. Holding the receiver between us, we’d announce to the operator, “We’d like to help those kids.”
Now here was my own child, showing the same big heart I’d once been encouraged to have, and how could I ignore her? I Googled the flyer’s return address. The address belonged to a man called Raymond. He was in his mid-60s. We called him and, holding the receiver between us, the way Aunt Sara and I used to, told him we needed his services. “Great!” Raymond said in a shaky but friendly voice, clearly amazed at receiving an order from a child.
学习啦在线学习网 Genie was happy all week. Technology has made some things outdated. But there are still other things the world will always require. In the rush of my daily life, I’d temporarily forgotten that. I guess I just needed a wake-up call.
25. Why did Genie beg to order the service?
A. She was afraid of being late. B. She wanted to help the old man.
C. She was curious about the service. D. She was interested in the rotary phone.
学习啦在线学习网 26. How did Raymond feel when receiving our order?
A. Excited. B. Disappointed. C. Doubtful. D. Regretful.

C. The Wake- up Call D. The Rotary Phone

Baird was a Scottish engineer, most famous for being the first person to show the use of a working television.
学习啦在线学习网 John Logie Baird was born on 14 August 1888 in Helensburgh on the west coast of Scotland, the son of a churchman. Though suffering ill health for most of his life, he showed early signs of inventiveness. When he was young he showed great interest in science. His studies at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College were interrupted by the outbreak of World War One. Considered unfit for the forces, He was refused by the army. Then he served as a chief engineer who was in charge of the engineers of the Clyde Valley Electrical Power Company. Baird then moved to the south coast of England and applied himself to creating a television. His family advised him not to, but he did not listen to them. He rented an attic, bought the things he needed and started working. Although he worked for a long time he was not successful. One day he saw a picture on his screen. So he rushed out to get someone he could “televise”. He found an office boy and took him back to his room for his experiment. However, no image of the boy appeared on his screen. The boy, terrified, had put down his head. When he put it up again his picture appeared on the screen. That’s how television had been discovered.
On 26 January 1926 he gave the world’s first demonstration of true television before 50 scientists. In 1927, his television was demonstrated over 438 miles of telephone line between London and Glasgow, and he formed the Baird Television Development Company (BTDC). In 1928, the BTDC achieved the first transatlantic (横渡大西洋) television broadcast between London and New York and the first transmission(传输) to a ship in mid-Atlantic. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a video game that came out for the Atari 2600 game system in 1982. It was based on a very popular film of the same name. Star programmer Howard Warshaw created it with consultation from the film director Steven Spielberg.
It was July 27th, 1982. Howard Warshaw was hot off the success of his most recent game, Raiders of the Lost Ark. He received a call from Atari C.E.O, Ray Kassar. Atari had bought the rights to make a video game version of Spilberg’s Movie, E.T.. Kassar told Warshaw that Spielberg had specifically asked for Warshaw to make the game, but Atari needed the game finished by September 1st in order to start selling it during the Christmas season.
It had taken Warshaw six months to create Raiders of the Lost Ark. He was expected to create E.T. in around five weeks. Warshaw accepted the challenge anyway and production began. Spielberg wanted players to explore different environments in 3D world. Usually companies like Atari have people test games before releasing them, but they decided to skip testing.
学习啦在线学习网 The game was a hot holiday item at first. Unfortunately, Atari overestimated how many they would sell. They made 5 million copies and they only sold 1.5 million. Most people who played the game hated it.
Too many copies of the game sat on store shelves. One employee remembers the game being discounted five times, from $49.95 to less than a dollar. A newspaper in New Mexico reported that between 10 and 20 semitrailer truckloads of Atari products were crushed and buried at landfill in Alamogordo. Atari lost over $100 million on E.T.. The game was so bad that it was said to have affected Atari’s reputation. The video game industry soon fell into a deep depression, with a profit $3.2 billion in 1983 to just over $100 million in 1985, almost a 97% drop. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial will long be remembered as one of the worst games ever made, if not one of the causes of the decline of entire video game industry.

C. they made too many copies of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
学习啦在线学习网 D. they were in a hurry to release it for the holiday season

学习啦在线学习网 C. The failure of the game made people lose interest in 3D environment.

学习啦在线学习网 Who at some point in his/her life does not need encouragement? E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a video game that came out for the Atari 2600 game system in 1982.
The game was a hot holiday item at first. Unfortunately, Atari overestimated how many they would sell. They made 5 million copies and they only sold 1.5 million. Most people who played the game hated it.
Too many copies of the game sat on store shelves. One employee remembers the game being discounted five times, from .95 to less than a dollar. A newspaper in New Mexico reported that between 10 and 20 semitrailer truckloads of Atari products were crushed and buried at landfill in Alamogordo. Atari lost over 0 million on E.T.. The game was so bad that it was said to have affected Atari’s reputation. The video game industry soon fell into a deep depression, with a profit .2 billion in 1983 to just over 0 million in 1985, almost a 97% drop. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial will long be remembered as one of the worst games ever made, if not one of the causes of the decline of entire video game industry.
