I drove along a road near my home, and this new road and infrastructure was created about 12 years ago. As I drove along it tonight I remembered Kelly.

Kelly was a student when this new road was constructed. Her mother passed away when Kelly was very young. She and her brother were raised by her father. She started to settle in college. The year after I taught her, a dreadful thing happened.

Kelly’s dad was about to turn on to the new road It was a very busy road and was designed so that the user could not automatically turn right. Kelly’s father was not familiar with the road He was driving in the morning with a right turn and then he met with a fatal accident.

Her father’s death put her into bad situation. So I decided to help the poor girl. I wrote that I would help her with one of the 6 modules that she still had to complete on her second and final year of her programme. I knew it would be difficult for Kelly to gain an element of normality but I intended to help her.

At that time I was just divorced from my husband and living in rented accommodation near where Kelly lived. Things were tough for me but I committed to help Kelly, I brought Kelly to my home where I tutored and supported her through the full module. I prepared all the notes. I got her to complete all the assignments at my home so that she would stay focused.

My support also helped her focus on her studies at such a terribly sad time in her life. Kelly’s lecturer was so impressed with her assignments that her teacher got Kelly to explain the higher level parts of the assignments to the rest of the class! This was so good for her self-esteem. Kelly completed her course, and I was so glad that she didn’t drop out.

  25. Why did the author mention the new road?

  A. It was very convenient for her.

  B. She had a traffic accident on it.

  C. She thought it was not designed properly.

  D. It had something to do with the death of her student’s father.

  26. What caused the death of Kelly’s dad most probably?

学习啦在线学习网 A. The busy road. B. A careless driver,

  C. His wrong operation. D. The darkness of the night.

学习啦在线学习网 27. What did the author do to help Kelly out?

学习啦在线学习网 A. She offered her economic support.

  B. She helped her to gain confidence.

学习啦在线学习网 C. She prevented her from being homeless.

  D. She managed to help her finish her studies.

Scientists in Mexico say they may have found a way to cut production of methane (甲烷), a gas linked to rising temperatures on the Earth’s surface. The scientists say their method may help reduce the methane released by cows, one of the main producers of the gas.

学习啦在线学习网 When talking about global warming, many people think of carbon dioxide, another heat- trapping gas. Studies have shown that large amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere re- fleet heat back to earth, causing climate changes. Methane is an even more powerful heat- trapping gas. Cows are known to produce high levels of methane when they eat and process food Farm animals are responsible for 44 percent of all human-caused methane.

学习啦在线学习网 Researchers at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico are studying how a cow’s diet affects the production of methane. The researchers are using a specially designed machine to measure the effect. The scientists use the machine to try to capture the animal’s breathing to examine the methane released.

学习啦在线学习网 Most of the gas is released when cows belch (打嗝). The digestive bacteria in a cow’s stomach causes the animal to send out the gas through its mouth. There are an estimated 1.3 to 1.5 billion cows in the world Each animal releases as much as 120 kilograms of methane per year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that, when measured in pounds» the effect of methane on climate change is more than 25 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.

As it is difficult to capture the gas released by cows for use as energy, one way to lessen its release is to change their diet. Scientists in some countries are looking for ways to decrease cow methane. But while they are trying different plants and chemical compounds 5 those products would be too costly and difficult to bring to Mexico.

  28. What can we learn from to the text?

  A. As heat-trapping gas, methane is more harmful than carbon dioxide.

学习啦在线学习网 B. Scientists are trying to make use of the methane released by cows for energy.

  C. Cows are responsible for the minority of methane released.

学习啦在线学习网 D. It is practical to change cows, diet for Mexicans now.

  29. How do cows produce methane mainly?

  A. By belching. B. By running.

  C. By digesting food in their stomachs. D. By breathing in air through mouths.

  30. What can scientists do to settle the problem caused by cows?

  A. Change what cows eat. B. Limit the number of cows.

学习啦在线学习网 C. Use their gases as energy. D. Fix machines on their mouths.

  31. What may be the best title for the text?

  A. Cows Are Much More Harmful Than Cars.

学习啦在线学习网 B. We Had Better Change Method of Raising Cows.

  C. Two Gases Are Causing the Warming of the Planet.

  D. Researchers Find a Way to Reduce Methane from Cows.

  D

Today we talk about expressions related to a powerful emotion: love. More specifically, we talk about expressions related to love gone or not quite right: Relationships that do not work out, relationships that are more trouble than they are worth, and relationships that make you wish you were alone.

After all, while some happy couples are celebrating Valentine’s Day, plenty of other people have more complicated relationships.

学习啦在线学习网 Our first expression may sound impossible. It is the love-hate relationship “Love” and “hate” are opposites, but they are both strong emotions. In the case of a love-hate relation-ship, a couple just keeps going back and forth between the two feelings. One day they fight like cats and dogs. Another day they sing together like lovebirds.

学习啦在线学习网 You can also have a love-hate relationship with something besides another person. If you love some parts about your work5 but hate other parts of it, you can say you have a love-hate relationship with your job.

Another expression that relates to opposing feelings is, “There is a fine line between love and hate.” A person can very easily go from loving to hating.

Star-crossed lovers are very different from those in a love-hate relationship. These types of lovers want to be together, but everything seems to keep them apart—even the stars. This expression comes from the belief of some cultures that the stars control our futures.

Probably the most famous star-crossed lovers are William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Star-crossed lovers never seem to get together. So they are rarely on the rebound. A re-bound relationship is the first relationship someone has after he or she has ended a serious, long-term relationship.

学习啦在线学习网 People on the rebound are easily hurt. So they often make bad decisions in choosing a new love interest. Instead of getting involved with someone else right away, someone on the re-bound probably needs some time alone, as well as distance from their former husband or wife—long distance.

学习啦在线学习网 32. What kind of expressions does the text mainly talk about?

  A. Ones expressing true love. B. Ones with problems of love.

  C. Ones describing Valentine’s Day. D. Ones containing the word “love”.

学习啦在线学习网 33. What do you know about a couple with a love-hate relationship?

  A. They both love cats and dogs. B. They always fight each other.

学习啦在线学习网 C. They get along well and badly. D. They live happily like lovebirds.

学习啦在线学习网 34. How can we describe star-crossed lovers?

学习啦在线学习网 A. They are quite unfortunate. B. They have the deepest love.

  C. They will get married in the end. D. They go from loving to hating easily.

  35. Which can best explain the underlined phrase “on the rebound”?

学习啦在线学习网 A. Easy-hurting. B. Living alone.

学习啦在线学习网 C. Feeling lonely. D. Failing in love again.

学习啦在线学习网 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Americans spend nearly $ 7 billion onHalloween Mostly on candy, andmostly on chocolate. But even milk chocolate hasa dark side. Most chocolatetoday comes from West Africa, where small I and holders grow more than three million tons of the fruit of the cocoa tree. To turn that fruit into chocolate requireslabor--and much of that labor is performed by children. More than 100,000 children in Ivory Coast and Ghana help produce more than half of the world’s cocoa, according to the US State Department. Worse, at least 10,000 of these kids are likely treated as slaves. The cocoa industry, including giantssuchas Hershey’s or Cadbury, promised in 2001 to end such child labor in the cocoa gardens. But the deadline for voluntary compliance has beencontinually pushed back and the current goal is to ensure that some 50 percent of farms are child-labor free. Fair Trade certified chocolate can help, as well as ensure thatAfrican farmers profit from the cocoa trade.
