学习啦在线学习网 Cherish the Moments with Our Parents

学习啦在线学习网 There was something in an elderly woman’s behavior that caught my eye. Unsure of her steps, the woman moved slowly, along with a younger woman who I guessed was her daughter. The daughter was rolling her eyes and checking her watch every few seconds.

The older woman left the younger one and began to tick through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. Without hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled at me and showed me a title on a piece of paper.

Rather than rush off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I think I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment. Her movements reminded me of my own mother, who had passed away the previous Christmas.

As we walked, the woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation. We found the movie and she told me it was the one she’d enjoyed when she was her son’s age and that she hoped he would enjoy it as much as she had. Maybe, she said he could enjoy it with his own young children.

学习啦在线学习网 I accompanied her to the queue at the cashier. As the cashier put the DVD into a plastic bag, I went over to the younger woman, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.

“Is that your mom?” I asked.

I had expected her to tell me it was none of my business. But she rolled her eyes and said, “Yeah.” There was annoyance in her reply. Still watching the mother, I said, “Mind some advice?”

  “Go ahead,” said the daughter.

I smiled to show her I wasn’t criticizing. “Cherish her,” I said, “When she’s gone, it’s the little moments that’ll come back to you. Moments like this. I know.”

It was true. I missed my mom still and remembered with sadness the moments when I’d used my impatience to make her life miserable.

学习啦在线学习网 The elderly woman moved slowly back to her daughter. Together they made their way toward the store’s exit. They stood there for a moment, side by side, watching the rush of the holiday current. Then the daughter glanced over and slowly placed her arm with apparently unaccustomed affection around her mother’s shoulders and gently guided her home.

学习啦在线学习网 56. The daughter checked her watch frequently because she ______.

学习啦在线学习网 A. had to wait for a friend B. wanted to buy a new watch

What Does the Length of Your Fingers Say About You?

学习啦在线学习网 Are you the peace-loving type or the ambitious go-getter? Your finger length might be a clue. Take a look at your fingers. Would you believe me if I told you that the length of your fingers in relation to one another can predict your personality? I know that it sounds like one of those silly tests you see on Facebook, but I have to admit that it is exactly correct for me. Here’s how it works.

学习啦在线学习网 Look at your three middle fingers of your hand. Is your index finger longer than your ring finger? Is your ring finger longer than your index finger? Or are the two ofthe same length? Find the situation that best matches your hand and see if what follows is an accurate description of your personality.

l Longer ring finger: The Sweet Talker

学习啦在线学习网 If your ring finger is longer than your index finger, research shows that you’re likely a charming type, and you can probably talk yourself out of any situation. Others often find this personality type irresistible and will go to great lengths to help you. You’re more likely to take risks, and you’re good at problem-solving. People in this category make great engineers, soldiers and crossword-puzzle solvers.

l Longer index finger: The (Over) Confident One

学习啦在线学习网 If your index finger is longer than your ring finger, chances are you are full of confidence—possibly even to the point of being over-confident and proud. You are not necessarily introverted (内向的), but you do enjoy time to yourself, especially when you’re trying to complete a project. You are a dream pursuer who can make things happen, but you may be shy when it comes to taking the first step in a relationship. You are also probably happy with what you have, but you’re always wishing for more.

学习啦在线学习网 l Index and ring finger areof the same length: The Peacemaker

If your index finger and ring finger are roughly of the same length, you are likely to avoid conflict at all costs and seek to keep the peace in your relationships. You are well-organized, faithful and sympathetic. But deep down under all of that caring and peace-loving, you also have a hot-tempered side that can appear unexpectedly when you’re pushed too far. You will try your hardest to avoid a fight.

How well do these descriptions match your personality? I was surprised at the accuracy in my case, but I’m not going to tell you which one it was!

  59. Which of the following hand could be an engineer’s hand?

  60. We can learn from the passage that the author ______.

学习啦在线学习网 A. is very charming and helpful B. always tries hard to avoid a fight

学习啦在线学习网 C. often takes silly tests on Facebook D. thinks the descriptions suit him well

学习啦在线学习网 61. What does the passage intend to tell us?

学习啦在线学习网 A. How accurate the description of the test is.

  B. The length of fingers can reveal personality.

  C. Why your fingers are not ofthe same length.

  D. Personality is determined by your finger length.

学习啦在线学习网 62. Where can you probably find the text?

学习啦在线学习网 A.A popular magazine. B. An official report.

  C.A public advertisement. D. A biology textbook.

  C

学习啦在线学习网 Why Do People Blink Their Eyes?

People blink(眨眼) their eyes tens of thousands of times every day. Scientists have long believed blinking was an involuntary movement and served mainly to keep the eye

balls wet. But a new study suggests it has a more important purpose.

学习啦在线学习网 An international team of scientists from the University of California at Berkeley studied the blinking of human eyelids. The journal Current Biology published their findings. The team said they found that blinking “repositions our eyeballs so we can stay focused”on what we are seeing. They said that when we blink our eyelids, the eyes roll back into their sockets—the bony area that surrounds and protects the eyes. However, the researchers found the eyes don’t always return to the same position. They said this causes the brain to tell the eye muscles to reorganize our eyesight.

Gerrit Maus is the lead writer of the report. He serves as an assistant professor of psychology at NanyangTechnologicalUniversity in Singapore. Maus said, “Our eye muscles are quite sluggish(迟缓的) and imprecise, so the brain needs to constantly adapt its motor signals to make sure our eyes are pointing where they’re supposed to. Our findings suggested that the brain measures the difference in what we see before and after a blink, and commands the eye muscles to make the needed corrections.”The researchers said that without such corrections our surroundings would appear unclear and even jumpy. They said the movement acts “like a Steadicam(摄影稳定器) of the mind.”

The researchers said they asked volunteers to sit in a dark room while staring at a small dot on a flat surface. They used special cameras to follow the volunteer’s blinks and eye movements. After each blink, the dot was moved one centimeter to the right. The volunteers did not notice this, but the brain did. It followed the movement and directed the eye muscles to refocus on the dot. After the dot was moved in this way 30 times, the volunteers’ eyes changed their focus to the place where they predicted it would be.

Professor Maus said, “Even though participants did not consciously register that the dot had moved, their brains did, and adjusted with the corrective eye movements. These findings add to our understanding of how the brain constantly adapts to changes, commanding our eye muscles to correct for errors in our bodies’ own hardware.”

  63. According to the new study, blinking eyes can ______.

  A. serve to keep the eyeballs wet B. reposition eyeballs to stay focused

学习啦在线学习网 C. consciously correct eye movements D. make our eyes adapt to motor signals

64.From the experiment, we can learn that _____________.

  A. volunteers could see the moving dot with special cameras

  B. the eyeballs could stay in the place as they were predicted

  C. participants were aware of the dot’s movements to the right

  D. the brain commanded the eye muscles to refocus on the dot

65.The underlinedword “register” in Paragraph 5 probably means ______.

学习啦在线学习网 A.realize B. refocus C. reserve D. reason

  66. This passage shows that ______.

  A. eye muscles are quite inactive and imprecise

  B. the research is of great value in the eye movement

学习啦在线学习网 C. the brain plays an important role in seeing things clearly

学习啦在线学习网 D. volunteers control their blinks to follow the changes of the dots

  D

College graduation eventually means taking much of your attention in your first job search. This process can be challenging, especially for those students who had second thoughts about their chosen major and intended career path—or those who majored in a field not directly connected to a specific career. If you are in one of these groups, fear not! Although your major, coursework, and academic performance are relevant to landing a job, they are not the only deciding factors on where you can work. So, just how important is your major to your job search?

学习啦在线学习网 Some majors are tied directly to specific career fields. For example, if you wish to become a teacher, you will likely have needed to complete an education program and eventually sit for a licensing exam. The same applies to majors in nursing. If you did not complete an accredited nursing program, you won’t be able to take the nursing licensure exam. In these cases, successfully completing a specific major is crucial to landing a job in the matching field.

Other majors, however, are closely related to career paths but don’t necessarily require a degree in the area. For example, students who majored in finance, math, or statistics may also have the necessary skills to be hired as an accountant. Although social work majors are most prepared to provide case management services to struggling populations, students who majored in psychology or sociology can be just as qualified.

学习啦在线学习网 Lastly, there are many industries, such as professional sales, education (non-teaching positions), insurance, and customer service management, which hire new graduates from several more majors, looking for more generalized requirements. They may simply want to know the student has completed his or her bachelor’s degree, which demonstrates college-level math and writing, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

学习啦在线学习网 Hopefully, as a college student, you were able to do more than just attend classes. Your non-academic experiences can be very influential on your future career as well. Did you work during college, volunteer, or participate in a club or organization? If so, and if you enjoyed these activities, seek out related careers. If you volunteered with a non-profit organization such as a homeless or domestic violence shelter, seek out positions in social services related to case management or victim advocacy(辩护). You may qualify for a position regardless of your major.

Although it often seems like your college major alone determines your career fate, this just isn’t the case. It may influence it, but there are other factors that influence your career options as well. If you don’t know what career options to consider based on your major, talk to your faculty or academic advisor. You may be surprised at what opportunities await!

学习啦在线学习网 67. To be a customer service manager, college graduates______.

  A. need to have related qualities B. should pass a licensing exam

  C. are required to major in insurance D. must have relevant experiences

  68. What is probably the best title for the passage?

学习啦在线学习网 A. Major Ups Your Career

学习啦在线学习网 B. Why Your College Major Matters

  C. How Important Your Major Is to Your Job

学习啦在线学习网 D. Major VS Career: Which Is Right for You

  69. The writer thinks that _____________.

  A. majors are closely linked to career paths

学习啦在线学习网 B. students of science tend to receive higher salaries

  C. volunteer experiences help graduates get employed

  D. social work graduates have more employment opportunities

学习啦在线学习网 四、One possible version:

学习啦在线学习网 Last month, we took Jack, an American exchange student who fell ill to a traditional Chinese doctor, which turned out to be an eye-widening experience for him.

学习啦在线学习网 It was in a math class that I noticed Jack coughing with a runny nose. Everyone looked at him with concern. Seeing this, one classmate and I offered to take him to the TCM department. He hesitated but followed. At the clinic, the doctor first looked at Jack for a while before feeling his pulse and checking his tongue. The doctor then asked if the cough had been on and off for a long time. In great surprise, Jack nodded his head. The doctor then wrote a prescription with instructions on how to take the medicine.

After boiling the herb medicine at home, I brought it to him in his dormitory. The first taste almost made him throw up. It was really too hard even for me. I comforted him with an old saying “Good medicine to the health tastes bitter to the mouth”. Jack managed to swallow the medicine with a frown. But after a week, when he recovered, he felt amazed at the effect of the Chinese medicine. At a class meeting about the deepest impressions about China, Jack chose “TCM in My Eyes” as the topic. He shared his experience of TCM, from doubt at first to belief in the end.

We all felt inspired and proud hearing a foreigner introducing the profound TCM. I have every reason to believe that with more and more international communication, TCM will be accepted globally and benefit more people in the future.

  Text 2

学习啦在线学习网 M: Can I help you?

W: In that case, uh, I’ll take a small one.

  Text 3

M: Claudia, how is your first day on campus working out?

W: This campus is too large. I’m not really sure how to get around it. How about you?

M: I’m having the same problem. That’s why we should leave a bit early to get to our biology class on time.

  Text 4

  M: Good morning,Sharon.

W: Good morning, Brent! How was your weekend?

学习啦在线学习网 M: Fine. My family and I had a BBQ for Easter. What did you do?

W: Nothing too much. I just hung out with a friend. We watched a new movie.

  Text 5

W: Good day at school, Bobby?

M: Yeah, pretty good. Except for one little thing …

W: Then why do I have a sinking feeling in my stomach? Failed exams? Your teacher wants to talk to me? Or…

  Text 6

学习啦在线学习网 M: Hi, Megan, you look terrible. What’s up?

学习啦在线学习网 W: Something terrible happened this morning…(voice trembling). Well, I was playing ball with Tinny, the girl next door and Bonzo in the garden, and the ball went into the road, and …

学习啦在线学习网 M: Oh, no! And is he…?

学习啦在线学习网 W: Yes. We took him to the vet’s immediately, but nothing could help.

W: The library is boring. Then how about going mountain biking?

M: That sounds great, but I’d probably break my arm or something like I did last time.

W: You won’t this time. Come on!

  M: Well…

学习啦在线学习网 W: OK. Forget it! How about fishing? Remember the last time we went? I caught like 10 fish...

学习啦在线学习网 M: Yeah. I remember. And the only thing I caught was an old boot. Just forget it.

学习啦在线学习网 W: OK. What do you suggest?

学习啦在线学习网 M: We could stay home and uh...pop some popcorn and play board games.

W: Listen, let’s try something fun this time! You won’t break your arm or get a sunburn. It’ll be really pleasant. Just give it a try. Come on. Let’s do it. Come on!

  Text 9

Dear Cathy, thanks for volunteering to clean up the science laboratory this afternoon. Today I have a teacher’s staff meeting at 3:30pm, so I can’t be there with you. Here is what you should do. First, clean all the glass containers. Second, wipe down all the worktables with a wet cloth. Third, put all the microscopes back on the shelf. Finally, sweep the floor and take the trash outside the door. Oh, one more thing, remember to turn off the lights and lock the door when you leave. If you have any questions, please ask Ms. Edwards in the classroom next door. You can return the key to me tomorrow when we have class at 10:30am. Thank you so much for your help!—Mr. Marston.

M: Is there something in between?

W: Yes. You can just have evening meals provided, which is half board.

  M: I’d prefer half board.

W: Do you have any special diet? Anything we should know about?

  M: Yes, I don’t eat red meat.
