NEW YORK— Picking a Christmas tree takes most people a few minutes, or a couple of hours if they head for the woods. Dave Murbach needs 11 months.

学习啦在线学习网 Almost every day of every year, Murbach’s thoughts turn to vision of a perfectly shaped evergreen tree that will take everyone's breath away.

学习啦在线学习网 Murbach is the man responsible for finding the towering tree that makes more attractive Manhattan’s RockefellerCenter each Christmas season.

“I'm always looking for a tree,” the center's chief gardener says. “I look for it even when I go to the beach in the summer. It’s like a homework assignment hanging over your head.”

学习啦在线学习网 And if he gets it wrong, there's nothing hiding it.

“Every day it's up, 400,000 people go by, and 2.5 million people watch the lighting celebration on television,”he says.

学习啦在线学习网 This year’s tree, a 74-foot Nomy spruce (云杉) from Richfield, Ohio, flown to New York on the world's largest cargo plane, was lighted on December 2.

学习啦在线学习网 The arrival of the tree leads in the Christmas season in New York — a tradition dating back to 1931, when the workers building RockefellerCenter put up a small tree with ornaments.

The search for the next year's tree starts soon after the old tree is chopped up for wood chips and horse-jumping logs.

学习啦在线学习网 Murbach has three standards: The tree must be at least 65 feet high, at least 35 feet across and leaves dense enough not to see through.

That's not as simple as it sounds. Though forests are full of evergreens, few get enough sunlight or space to fill out. And branches in snow regions often break under the weight, making trees unbalanced.

学习啦在线学习网 Back at the office, he sorts through hundreds of letters from people offering their trees, many addressed simply to “Mr. Christmas Tree Man.”

Though there was occasional anxiety attack and sleepless night, Murbach knows the effect the tree has on people: “It's for bringing people together, attempting to bring together people you love. That's what I hope it sets off.” But Murbach says he's always too worn out to celebrate Christmas.

  21. Which is the correct order of the events in the passage?

  a. Murbach’s thoughts turn to a perfectly shaped tree.

学习啦在线学习网 b. 2.5 million people watch the Christmas tree.

学习啦在线学习网 c. The tree is flown to New York.

学习啦在线学习网 d. It was lighted on December 2.

学习啦在线学习网 e. The tree is chopped up.

  f. Murbach searches for the tree.

  A. a, b, c, d, e, f B. c, d, b, f, e, a

  C. c, d, e, b, a, f D. a, f, c, d, b, e

学习啦在线学习网 22. Why does Murbach take his job seriously?

学习啦在线学习网 A. Because he wants everyone to be happy with his choice.

  B. Because he hopes to make everybody unable to breathe.

学习啦在线学习网 C. Because he enjoys showing off.

  D. Because he wishes to attract people's attention to himself.

  23. According to Murbach' s standard of trees, the best tree must _____.

学习啦在线学习网 A. be evergreen B. have lots of space between their branches

  C. be tall enough not to see through D. be equally balanced

  B

About this time every year, I get very nostalgic(怀旧的). Walking through my neighborhood on a fall afternoon reminds me of a time not too long ago when sounds of children filled the air, children playing games on a hill, and throwing leaves around in the street below. I was one of those children, carefree and happy. I live on a street that is only one block long. I have lived on the same street for sixteen years. I love my street. One side has six houses on it, and the other has only two houses, with a small hill in the middle and a huge cottonwood tree on one end. When I think of home, I think of my street. Only I see it as it was before. Unfortunately things change. One day, not long ago, I looked around and saw how different everything has become. Life on my street will never be the same because neighbors are quickly grown old, friends are growing up and leaving, and the city is planning to destroy my precious hill and sell the property to contractors.

学习啦在线学习网 It is hard for me to accept that many of my wonderful neighbors are growing old and won’t be around much longer. I have fond memories of the couple across the street, who sat together on their porch swing almost every evening, the widow next door who yelled at my brother and me for being too loud, and the crazy old man in a black suit who drove an old car. In contrast to those people, the people I see today are very old neighbors who have seen better days. The man in the black suit says he wants to die, and another neighbor just sold his house and moved into a nursing home. The lady who used to yell at us is too tired to bother any more, and the couple across the street rarely go out to their front porch these days. It is difficult to watch these precious people as they near the end of their lives because at once I thought they would live forever.

The “comings and goings” of the younger generation of my street are now mostly “goings” as friends and peers move on. Once upon a time, my life and the lives of my peers revolved around home. The boundary of our world was the gutter at the end of the street. We got pleasure from playing night games or from a breathtaking ride on a tricycle. Things are different now, as my friends become adults and move on. Children who rode tricycles now drive cars. The kids who once played with me now have new interests and values as they go their separate ways. Some have gone away to college like me, a few got married, two went into the army, and one went to prison. Watching all these people grow up and go away makes me long for the good old days.

学习啦在线学习网 Perhaps the biggest change on my street is the fact that the city is going to turn my precious hill into several lots for now homes. For sixteen years, the view out of my kitchen window has been a view of that hill. The hill was a fundamental part of my childhood life; it was the hub of social activity for the children of my street. We spent hours there building forts, sledding, and playing tag. The view out of my kitchen window now is very different; it is one of tractors and dump trucks tearing up the hill. When the hill goes, the neighborhood will not be the same. It is a piece of my childhood. It is a visual reminder of being a kid. Without the hill, my street will be just another pea in the pod.

There was a time when my street was my world, and I thought my world would never change. But something happened. People grow up, and people grow old. Places changes, and with the change comes the heartache of knowing I can never go back to the times I loved. In a year or so, I will be gone just like many of my neighbors. I will always look back to my years as a child, but the place I remember will not be the silent street whose peace is interrupted by the sounds of construction. It will be the happy, noisy, somewhat strange, but wonderful street I knew as a child.

“I don't think I can do this any more.” “Yes, you can. You only have five more radiation treatments to go. ” I held my wife Becky close.

Ever since the breast cancer diagnosis(诊断), she had tried hard to be strong for the kids and for me. When her diagnosis came, my first thought was there was no way I could lose my wife. The doctors assured us the cancer was discovered early so we were feeling positive.

学习啦在线学习网 Becky had received an operation and was recovering from it. After six weeks of radiation therapy(治疗), she was facing her final five treatments. She was weak and tired, in low spirits. Seeing her suffering, I felt so helpless and powerless.

As soon as I was outside, long-held frustration and anger erupted in me like a volcano. I took a hammer and suddenly was swinging as hard as I could, beating heavily on the front porch(门廊). While doing so, I imagined I was beating my wife's cancer. With all my strength, I destroyed the porch.

During the treatment, my wife had been very brave. She said she had it easy, but I don't think it was easy for her.

Seeing the porch gone, Becky shook her head at the window. I came into the room, not knowing how she would react to what I had done.

“Becky, are you mad at me?” She looked at me in surprise. “For what?” I pointed at the gate. “For tearing down the porch.” She laughed. “Look how sunny this room is now. I love that it's bright in here.”

“You comforted me in my darker hour, Vince. You've found a way to deal with your own frustration. By destroying the porch, you let the sunshine in.”

Parents will do anything for their children. Whether it would be the food, clothes, or the place they live in,parents will always make sure their children have the best of everything. One of the biggest concerns that parents currently have is educating their children. They are faced with lots of difficulties when it comes to education for their young ones. Choices include private school, charter school, public school or home schooling.

学习啦在线学习网 Fortunately for parents, there are a variety of different strategies that they can take in order to in-crease their child’s overall intelligence. According to Ross A. Thompson, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis, a child’s brain will actually reach 90% of its full size by the time they start kindergarten.

学习啦在线学习网 Researchers at NorthwesternUniversity in Chicago concluded that playing a musical instrument directly affected the brain stem, the lower section of the brain. Moreover, children that learn an instrument at an early age tend to continue it when they are older. And numerous studies show that a well balanced meal is essential for a child’s mental as well as physical health. Some other researchers recommended that a second language should be taught when children are in preschool. They state that three to four years of age is the perfect time and that any age under four would work perfectly fine for a child’s brain development.

学习啦在线学习网 The average child will learn how to read between kindergarten and second grade. Many parents can give their children a jump start by teaching them to read before they start school. Children could have an adequate background of the alphabet and sounds of words before attending school. This can be done by simply reading to them whenever you want. The more comfortable they get,the easier the process will be.

A.parents find it hard to satisfy their kids’ various demands

B.parents meet a new challenge when raising their kids

C.parents have more choices in offering education to their kids

学习啦在线学习网 D.parents get actively involved in the process of their kids’ growth

C.To help kids develop as fully as possible.

学习啦在线学习网 D.To use as many available resources as possible.

学习啦在线学习网 B.The effective ways to help develop children’s brains.

学习啦在线学习网 C.The vital factors to have a great effect on children’s health.

D.The practical steps to arouse children’s interest in study.

  A.inspiration B. introduction C. suggestion D. promotion

学习啦在线学习网 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

学习啦在线学习网 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

学习啦在线学习网 “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” — Lao Tzu

If you are in a city where everyone rushes, realize that you don’t have to be like everyone else. You can be different. You can walk instead of driving in rush hour traffic. You can be on your iPhone or Blackberry less, and disconnected sometimes. Your environment doesn’t control your life — you do. I’m not going to tell you how to give you a step-by-step guide to moving slower. 36

  1. Do less.

学习啦在线学习网 Cut back on your projects, on your task list, on how much you try to do each day. Focus not on quantity but on quality. 37 Save smaller, routine tasks for later in the day, but give yourself time to focus.

  2. Have fewer meetings.

38 And they eat into your day, forcing you to squeeze the things you really need to do into small windows, and making you rush.

  3. 39

When you do the important things with focus, without rush, there will be things that get pushed back, and that don’t get done. And you need to ask yourself: how necessary are these things? What would happen if I stopped doing them?

  4. Practice mindfulness.

学习啦在线学习网 Simply learn to live in the present, rather than things so much about future or the past. When you eat, fully appreciate your food. When you are with someone, be with them fully. When you are walking, appreciate your surroundings, no matter where you are.

Try these things out. Life is better when unrushed. 40

学习啦在线学习网 A. Start to put off or cancel the unnecessary.

  B. Meetings are usually a “big waste of time”.

  C. The world likely won’t end if you don’t pass one of the examinations.

  D. But here are some things to consider and perhaps adopt, if they work for your life.

  E. Remember the quote: if nature can get everything done without rushing, so can you.

学习啦在线学习网 F. Pick 2-3 important things — or even just one important thing — and work on those first.

  G. Give yourself more time to get ready and get there.

  第二节:书面表达(满分25分)

学习啦在线学习网 This poem displays to us the true meaning of friendship that a friend will always come to your company and aid whenever necessary, especially when you are going through hard times.

As to the meaning of true friendship, I personally subscribe to the view expressed in the poem. To put it in other words, a friend in need is a friend indeed. For example, my best friend Mike displayed the true meaning of friendship. It was he who encouraged me to restart when I was depressed with the failure in the mid-term exam.

Making a good friend like Mike is anything but easy. First, you should win the trust of your intended friend. Let him know you are the one worth his friend. Second, do something for your friend. A friend is not your slave but the one you should serve. To conclude, we can only gain friendship by paying others friendship.
