Text 10
I was 23 years old on a plane, returning home to Dallas, Texas. Like tens of thousands of others, I was just trying to get home without incident.
I sat, in uniform, in a window seat and avoided eye contact with my fellow passengers. No one was sitting in the seat next to me, which made me lonely. A young girl, not more than 10 years old, suddenly appeared. She smiled and handed me a magazine. I accepted her offering, her quiet ―welcome home‖. Her small gesture of pity was the first I had experienced in a long time.
学习啦在线学习网 I believe in the connection between strangers when they reach out to one another. That young girl undoubtedly has no memory of what happened years ago. I like to think of her as having grown up, continuing to touch others and teaching her children to do the same. I know she might have been told to give me the ―gift‖ by her mother. It doesn't matter why she gave me the magazine. The important thing is she did.
Since then, I have followed her example and tried, in different ways for different people, to do the same for them. Like me on that long ago plane ride, they will never know why a stranger took the time to extend a hand. But I know that my attempts since then are all because of that little girl. Her offer of a magazine to a tired, scared and lonely soldier has echoed throughout my life. I have to believe that my small gestures have the same effect on others. And to that little girl, now a woman, I would like to take this opportunity to say again, thank you.

Text 10
学习啦在线学习网 M: Mary Ann Allison, suppose the teacher or professor gives you a choice of a topic, a subject, within a given field, what will you do?
学习啦在线学习网 W: Well, I have a couple of thoughts. The first, if you have any choice at all of a topic, is to do something that you're really interested in, because the more you're interested in it naturally, the better you'll write and the easier it'll be.
M: After you have found a subject you think you would like to write about, what comes next?
W: Once you've decided on something, another consideration would be how much information you can find. So, if I'm considering a topic, I do spend 10 or 15 minutes looking at information. My purpose is to see if there's enough for me to be able to easily research and write what I want to write. And if there's not, then I might choose something else to write on. And then the next thing that I would do is what I call a back-of-the-envelope outline. M: Back of the envelope, and what is that?
W: So that's when I sit down, maybe not at my desk, not at my computer, maybe even at a café, or with a cup of coffee. And I just kind of think about it, and I think about the topic and what I would say to a friend. And I just write down short notes about whatever comes to mind. What would I say to a friend about this? Or, what do I want to know about this? And when I have—oh, I don't know—anywhere between five and 10 points, I stop.
