初中晨读励志英语美文:人生的两条真理
The art of living is to know when to hold fast
and when to let go. For life is a paradox:
it enjoins us to cling to its many gifts
学习啦在线学习网 even while it ordains their eventual relinquishment.
The rabbis of old put it this way: “A man comes to
学习啦在线学习网 this world with his fist clenched, but when he dies,
his hand is open.”Surely we ought to hold fast
学习啦在线学习网 to life, for it is wondrous, and full of a beauty
that breaks through every pore of God’s own earth.
We know that this is so, but all too often we
recognize this truth only in our backward glance
学习啦在线学习网 when we remember what it was and then suddenly
学习啦在线学习网 realize that it is no more.We remember
学习啦在线学习网 a beauty that faded, a love that waned.
学习啦在线学习网 But we remember with far greater pain that
we did not see that beauty when it flowered,
that we failed to respond with love when
it was tendered.A recent experience re-taught me
this truth. I was hospitalized following a
severe heart attack and had been in intensive care
for several days. It was not a pleasant place.
One morning, I had to have some additional tests.
The required machines were located in a building
at the opposite end of the hospital, so I
had to be wheeled across the courtyard on a gurney.
As we emerged from our unit, the sunlight hit me.
学习啦在线学习网 That’s all there was to my experience. Just the light
of the sun, and yet how beautiful it was — how warming,
学习啦在线学习网 how sparkling, how brilliant!I looked to see
whether anyone else relished the sun’s golden glow,
but everyone was hurrying to and fro, most with eyes
fixed on the ground. Then I remembered how often I,
too, had been indifferent to the grandeur of each day,
学习啦在线学习网 too preoccupied with petty and sometimes even mean
学习啦在线学习网 concerns to respond to the splendor of it all.
学习啦在线学习网 The insight gleaned from that experience is really
as commonplace as was the experience itself:
life’s gifts are precious — but we are
too heedless of them. Here then is the first pole
学习啦在线学习网 of life’s paradoxical demands on us:
Never too busy for the wonder and the awe of life.
学习啦在线学习网 Be reverent before each dawning day.
Embrace hour. Seize each golden minute.
Hold fast to life, but not so fast that
you cannot let go. This is the second side of
学习啦在线学习网 life’s coin, the opposite pole of its paradox:
we must accept our losses, and learn how to let go.
初中晨读励志英语美文:工作、劳作和娱乐
So far as I know, Miss Hannah Arendt was
学习啦在线学习网 the first person to define the essential difference
between work and labor. To be happy, a man must feel,
学习啦在线学习网 firstly, free and, secondly, important. He cannot
be really happy if he is compelled by society to do
what he does not enjoy doing, or if what he enjoys doing
学习啦在线学习网 is ignored by society as of no value or importance.
In a society where slavery in the strict sense
has been abolished, the sign that what a man does
学习啦在线学习网 is of social value is that he is paid money to do it,
学习啦在线学习网 but a laborer today can rightly be called a wage slave.
A man is a laborer if the job society offers him is
of no interest to himself but he is compelled to
take it by the necessity of earning a living
and supporting his family. The antithesis to labor is play.
When we play a game, we enjoy what we are doing,
学习啦在线学习网 otherwise we should not play it, but it is
学习啦在线学习网 a purely private activity; society could not care less
学习啦在线学习网 whether we play it or not.Between labor and play stands work.
学习啦在线学习网 A man is a worker if he is personally interested in the job
which society pays him to do; what from the point of view of society
学习啦在线学习网 is necessary labor is from his own point of view voluntary play.
学习啦在线学习网 Whether a job is to be classified as labor or work depends,
not on the job itself, but on the tastes of the individual
学习啦在线学习网 who undertakes it. The difference does not, for example,
coincide with the difference between a manual and mental job;
学习啦在线学习网 a gardener or a cobbler may be a worker, a bank clerk a laborer.
学习啦在线学习网 Which a man is can be seen from his attitude toward leisure.
To a worker, leisure means simply the hours he needs
to relax and rest in order to work efficiently.
He is therefore more likely to take too little leisure
than too much; workers die of coronaries and forget
their wives’ birthdays. To the laborer, on the other hand,
学习啦在线学习网 leisure means freedom from compulsion, so that it is natural
for him to imagine that the fewer hours he has to spend laboring,
and the more hours he is free to play, the better.
