The Blackbird and the Thrush八哥与画眉

  The Blackbird and the Thrush

Alfred Perceval Graves

  One evening as I walked down by a green bush,

I heard two birds whistling,

  ’Twas the blackbird and thrush;

  I asked the reason they were so merrie,

And in answer they sang back to me,

We are single and free.”

Next morning as that green bush I passed all alone,

Two thrushes piped out of it.

学习啦在线学习网   The blackbird was flown;

  I asked them the reason their hearts were so gay,

  It was joyfully they answered me,

  ”We have mated to-day.”

One morning little after that bush I went by,

  When O’ver me most piteously

学习啦在线学习网   I heard my thrush cry;

I asked why such sorrow he poured from the tree,

  And he answered,

  “’tis the blackbird has my love stolen from me.”

  Oh,freedom it is pleasant,

Love returned is delight!

  But a lover deserted must mourn noon and night,

  Break my house take my goods,

  I can gather fresh gain;

  But love’s ruined bower who shall build up again?

  我问它们心情如此欢畅的缘故;

  听见那只画眉在我头上哀哀痛哭;

  被抛弃的爱人却会日夜悲苦;

学习啦在线学习网   即使夺走我的财产拆毁我的房屋;

  The Rhodora

Ralph Waldo Emerson

  On being asked, Whence is the flower?

  In May, when sea-winds pierced our solitudes,

  I found the fresh Rhodora in the woods,

Spreading its leafless blooms in a damp nook,

  To please the desert and the sluggish brook.

  The purple petals, fallen in the pool,

学习啦在线学习网   Made the black water with their beauty gay;

  Here might the red-bird come his plumes to cool,

  And court the flower that cheapens his array.

Rhodora! if the sages ask thee why

  This charm is wasted on the earth and sky,

  Tell them, dear, that if eyes were made for seeing,

Then Beauty is its own excuse for being:

  Why thou wert there, O rival of the rose!

  I never thought to ask, I never knew:

But, in my simple ignorance, suppose

The self-same Power that brought me there brought you.

  让忧郁的池水换上美丽欢快的容颜;

Before Two Portraits of My Mother两幅母亲肖像前

Before Two Portraits of My Mother两幅母亲肖像前

I love the beautiful young girl of this

学习啦在线学习网 portrait, my mother, painted years ago

学习啦在线学习网 when her forehead was white, and there was no

  shadow in the dazzling Venetian glass

  of her gaze. But this other likeness shows

  the deep trenches across her forehead's white

  marble. The rose poem of her youth that

  her marriage sang is far behind. Here is

学习啦在线学习网 my sadness: I compare these portraits, one

  of a joy-radiant brow, the other care-

学习啦在线学习网 heavy: sunrise—and the thick coming on

And yet how strange my ways appear,

学习啦在线学习网 for when I look at these faded lips my heart

学习啦在线学习网 smiles, but at the smiling girl my tears start.

  —Emile Nelligan (1879-1941)
