True or False:
●I would be happier if I made more money, found the perfect husband, lost 10 pounds or moved to a new house.
●Happiness is genetic. You can’t change how happy you are any more than you can change how tall you are.
学习啦在线学习网 ●Success brings happiness.
学习啦在线学习网 Answers: False, False, False.
If recent scientific research on happiness---and there has been quite a bit---has proved anything, it’s that happiness is not a goal. It’s a process. Although our tendency to be happy or not is partly inborn, it’s also partly within our control. Perhaps more surprising, happiness brings success, not the other way around. Though many people think happiness is hard to find, scientists have actually pinned it down and know how to get it.
“Many of us have material things and our basic needs met, so we are looking for what comes after that,” says Diener, a psychologist. “Materialism isn’t bad. It’s only bad if we use it to replace other things in life like meaningful work, a good marriage, kids and friends. People are recognizing that those who make money more important than love have lower levels of life satisfaction.”
“People around the world want it. If you ask people what they want for their children, they will say for them to be happy. There is no doubt that happiness matters to and affects everyone.”
学习啦在线学习网 Among the major findings of the last decade is that the pursuit of happiness is a worthy cause. Diener says. “Happiness doesn’t just mean feeling good. It’s good for you and for society. Happy people are more successful, have better relationships, are healthier and live longer. We’ve learned in 10 years that happy people are more productive at work, learn more in school, get promoted more, are creative and are more popular.”

学习啦在线学习网 A. draw people’s attention to the author

学习啦在线学习网 C. base the author’s analysis of happiness on your answers
D. test whether you have a correct understanding of happiness

学习啦在线学习网 A. happiness lies in the process of the pursuit of it
学习啦在线学习网 B. happiness is completely out of control sometimes
学习啦在线学习网 C. happiness is determined by materialism
D. happiness brings and results from success
26. From the passage, we can infer that_____.
A. people around the world are affected by happiness
B. the happier you are, the more likely you are to lead a better life.
学习啦在线学习网 C. happiness is good not only for you but also for our society
D. many people think it very difficult to pursue happiness

Our risk of cancer rises dramatically as we age. So it makes sense that the elderly should be routinely screened for new tumors — or doesn’t it?
While such vigilant(警觉的)tracking of cancer is a good thing in general, researchers are increasingly questioning whether all of this testing is necessary for the elderly. With the percentage of people over age 65 expected to nearly double by 2050, it’s important to weigh the health benefits of screening against the risks and costs of routine testing.
In many cases, screening can lead to additional biopsies(活检) and surgeries to remove cancer, which can cause side effects, while the cancers themselves may be slow-growing and may not cause serious health problems in patients’ remaining years. But the message that everyone must screen for cancer has become so rooted that when health care experts recommended that women under 50 and over 74 stop screening for breast cancer, it caused a fierce reaction among doctors, patients and advocacy groups.
It’s hard to get rid of deeply held beliefs about cancer screening with scientific data. Certainly, there are people over age 75 who have had cancers detected by routine screening, and gained several extra years of life because of treatment. And clearly, people over age 75 who have other risk factors for cancer, such as a family history or prior personal experience with the disease, should continue to get screened regularly. But for the remainder, the risk of cancer, while increased at the end of life, must be balanced with other factors like remaining life expectancy(预期寿命).
A recent study suggests that doctors start to make more objective decisions about who will truly benefit from screening- especially considering the explosion of the elderly that will soon swell our population.
It’s not an easy calculation to make, but one that make sense for the whole patient. Dr. Otis Brawley said, “Many doctors are ordering these tests just purely to cover themselves, after all at present there are more and more medical disputes. So we need to think about the reasonable use of health care and stop talking about the rationing(定量配给) of health care.”
That means making some difficult decisions with elderly patients, and going against the misguided belief that when it comes to health care, more is always better.
学习啦在线学习网 28. How do some researchers now look at routine cancer screening for the elderly?
A. It adds too much to their medical bills. B. It helps increase their life expectancy.
C. They are doubtful about necessity. D. They think it does more than good.
29. What is the conventional view about women screening for breast cancer?
A. It applies to women over 50. B. It is a must for adult women.
学习啦在线学习网 C. It is optional for young women. D. It doesn’t apply to women over 74.
学习啦在线学习网 30. What does the underlined word “ cover” most probably mean in paragraph 6 ?
A. protect B. be famous C. benefit D. hide
学习啦在线学习网 31. What does the author say is the general view about health care?
A. The more, the better. B. Prevention is better than cure.
学习啦在线学习网 C. Better early than late. D. Better care, longer life.

学习啦在线学习网 Energy independence. It has a nice ring to it. Doesn’t it ? If you think so, you’re not alone, because energy independence has been the dream of American president for decades, and never more so than in the past few years, when the most recent oil price shock has been partly responsible for kicking off the great recession(经济衰退).
学习啦在线学习网 “Energy independence” and its rhetorical (修辞的) companion “energy security” are, however, two concepts that are not easy to tell apart. What is it that we want independence from, exactly ?
学习啦在线学习网 Most people would probably say that they want to be independent from imported oil. But there are reasons that we buy all that oil from elsewhere.
学习啦在线学习网 The first reason is that we need it to keep our economy running. Yes, there is a trickle(涓涓细流) of bio-fuel(生物燃料) available, and more may become available, but most biofuels cause economic waste and environmental destruction.
Second, Americans have basically decided that they don’t really want to produce all their own oil. They value the environmental quality they preserve over their oil imports from abroad. Vast areas of the United States are banned to explore and produce oil in the name of environmental protection. To what extent are Americans really willing to tolerate the environmental impacts of domestic(国内的) energy production in order to cut back imports
Third, there are benefits to trade. It allows for economic efficiency, and when we buy things from places that have lower production costs than we do, we benefit. And although you don’t read about this much, the United States is also a large exporter of oil products, selling about 2 million barrels of petroleum products per day to about 90 countries.
学习啦在线学习网 There is no question that the United States imports a great deal of energy and, in fact, relies on that steady flow to maintain its economy. When that flow is interrupted, we feel the pain in short supplies and higher prices. At the same time, we get massive economic benefits when we buy the most affordable energy on the world market and when we engage in energy trade around the world.
32.What does the author say about energy independence for America?
A. It sounds very attractive. B. It will bring oil prices down.
C. It ensures national security. D. It has long been everyone’s dream.
学习啦在线学习网 33.What does the author think of bio-fuels?
学习啦在线学习网 A. They keep America’s economy running healthily.
B. They cause serious damage to the environment.
C. They prove to be a good alternative(substitute) to petroleum.
D. They do not provide a sustainable energy supply.
学习啦在线学习网 34.Why does America rely heavily on oil imports?
A. It wants to expand its storage of raw oil.
学习啦在线学习网 B. Its own oil reserves are quickly running out.
C. Its own oil production falls short of demand.
D. It wants to keep its own environment untouched.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
学习啦在线学习网 A. To explain the increase of international oil trade.
B. To raise Americans’ awareness of the energy crisis.
C. To argue for America’s dependence on oil imports.
学习啦在线学习网 D. To stress the importance of energy protection.

学习啦在线学习网 The Bystander (旁观者)Effect
学习啦在线学习网 When an emergency situation occurs, observers are more likely to take action if there are few or no other witnesses. _____36______
The bystander effect is also called the Genovese effect, which is named after Catherine “Kitty" Genovese, a young woman who was cruelly murdered on March 13, 1964. Early in the morning, 28-year-old Genovese was returning home from work. As she approached her apartment entrance, she was attacked and stabbed (刺) by a man later identified as Winston Moseley. Despite Genovese's repeated cries for help, _______37_______. The attack first began at 3:20, but it was not until 3:50 that someone first contacted police.
Many psychologists were set thinking by the incident, as well as most Americans. As the conclusion, the bystander effect came out and later proved by a series of studies and experiments.
学习啦在线学习网 There are two major factors that contribute to the bystander effect._____38_____. Because there are other observers, individuals do not feel as much pressure to take action, since the responsibility to take action is thought to be shared among all of those present. The second reason is the need to behave in correct and socially acceptable ways. When other observers fail to react, individuals often take this as a signal that a response is not needed or not appropriate.
_____39_____. In the case of Kitty Genovese, many of the 38 witnesses reported that they believed that they were witnessing a "lovers' quarrel", and _____40______.
A. They hesitate and assess the risk of getting hurt
学习啦在线学习网 B. This phenomenon is referred to as the bystander effect.
学习啦在线学习网 C. Other researchers have found that onlookers are less likely to take action if the situation is unclear
D. First, the presence of other people creates a division of responsibility
E. they did not realize that the young woman was actually being murdered.
F. none of the dozen or so people in the nearby apartment building who heard her cries called police for help.
G. the attacker didn’t stop stabbing her.

After a CT scan, the doctor said his leg injury was a bit serious and that he had to be treated for over a month.
Fortunately, he has the insurance to cover the medical costs. Please don’t worry about him since we are taking good care of him every day.
