学习啦在线学习网 (共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
学习啦在线学习网 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。
A
学习啦在线学习网 I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles” of directions e very time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”
Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have names; in Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to trave lers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.
学习啦在线学习网 It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, ‘Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impolite, They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

The 14-year-old, Amit Dodani, a talented speaker and persuasive debater at school, suffered as a child from a speech disorder.
He began working with a speech therapist (理疗师) when he was 6 years old, but it was his decision to try out for debate team at the end of seventh grade that helped him most.
“That experience changed my life,” he wrote after his team went on to nationals. “It gave me hope, and helped me see my own true potential.”
Since he launched MynameMystory last year, the site has attracted national and even international attention. Amit’s mom said her son’s website is meant to send a message that no one is alone in their experience, showing how people overcame their challenges and how others can, too.
“The big thing that clicked in Amit was the belief that people are really needed (to help each other) in this country,” she said. “I wasn’t surprised he wanted to do this, because at such a young age he had this spirit in him.”
In addition to the website, Amit also wanted to expand the idea of sharing stories. So he asked his friends and classmates to donate books to distribute to local hospitals. He hoped to collect perhaps 1,000, but in just two weeks, he received more than 2,300 donations.
“There was an absolute connection between the website and books,” Amit said. “But books are something that can really make a difference to someone who is in the hospital and can’t go to school.”
学习啦在线学习网 Amit said he’s hoping to organize a large live event for MynameMystory at the end of this year at Chaminade High School in West Hills. Those who shared their stories on the website will be invited to speak and encourage others to share their stories of overcoming challenges.

A European Union program is letting blind people experience famous paintings for the first time. It uses three dimensional (3-D) printing to re-create famous paintings so they can be touched.
One painting printed with the new technology is Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss.” It is a popular attraction at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria. The painting shows a man and a woman standing in a field filled with flowers. They are wearing gold robes and have their arms around each other. The man leans down to kiss the woman.
Klimt finished the painting in 1908. Until now, people who had trouble seeing could not appreciate the artwork. But thanks to the reproduction they can touch the piece and feel the ridges and depressions. Andreas Reichinger started making 3-D versions of artwork in 2010. He said this reproduction was his most difficult project because the couple’s robes are so detailed.
Dominika Raditsch is a blind museum visitor. She touched the reproduction. As she moved her hands around it she said, ”Exactly, can you see these? There are so many details.“ Raditsch said she can imagine what the original painting looks like when she touches the reproduction. “It’s somehow round. You can feel it. It comes with it. And in many places it’s so smooth. And then I think to myself: it probably shines too!” Raditsch said.
The Belvedere is not the only museum to have 3-D versions of its artwork. Some of the pieces at the Prado, in Madrid, Spain, have reproductions that can be touched. But the piece in Vienna has one special part: it is made with widely available 3-D printing technology. That means one day, blind art fans anywhere in the world could download the source files and print the reproductions themselves.

学习啦在线学习网 A. A European Union project.
B. A popular painting.
C. A 3-D technology.
D. A famous museum.
29. Why did Reichinger say this reproduction was difficult to finish?
A. The painting was reproduced detailedly.
学习啦在线学习网 B. The original artwork was made in 1908.
C. Blind art fans can’t download the source.
学习啦在线学习网 D. The 3-D technology is not available.
30. How did Raditsch feel when she first touched the reproduction?
A. Awkward. B. Puzzled. C. Excited. D. Nervous.

A. A European Union Program for Museum Visitors

You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. “They” did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering. “They” are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as “they” are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing(内化)your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.
学习啦在线学习网 Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are individuals who might like to control their lives, but they don’t let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don’t blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.
Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims relish (沉溺)in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others---and even themselves---to feel like victims, too. Creators consciously choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but all around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives.
学习啦在线学习网 In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.
In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have a fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.
学习啦在线学习网 32. What does the word “They” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A. Opportunities and problems. B. People and things around you.
学习啦在线学习网 C. Creators and their choices. D. Victims and their sufferings.
学习啦在线学习网 33. According to Paragraph 2, creators __________.
A. seem willing to experience failures in life B. possess the ability to predict future life
C. have potential to create something new D. handle ups and downs of life wisely
34. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Creators and victims are masters of their lives.
B. Creators and victims face quite different things in life.
学习啦在线学习网 C. Victims can influence more people than creators.
D. Compared with victims, creators are more emotional.
35. The examples mentioned in Paragraph 4 show that _______________.
A. people need family support to deal with challengers in life
B. strong attachment to sufferings in life pulls people into victims
C. it takes creators quite a long time to get rid of their pains
D. one’s experiences determine his attitude toward life

A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. When you recognize your teen is under stress, how can parents help your teen stay calm before an exam?
Be involved. Parents need to be involved in their teen’s work. 36 What they look for is your presence—to talk,to cry,or simply to sit with them quietly. Communicate openly with your teen. Encourage your teen to express his worries and fears, but don’t let them focus on those fears.

The Basics of Math—Made Clear
Basic Math introduces students to the basic concepts of mathematics, as well as the fundamentals of more tricky areas. These 30 fantastic lectures are designed to provide students with an understanding of arithmetic and to prepare them for Algebra (代数) and beyond.
学习啦在线学习网 The lessons in Basic Math cover every basic aspect of arithmetic. They also look into exponents (指数), the order of operations, and square roots. In addition to learning how to perform various mathematical operations, students discover why these operations work, how a particular mathematical topic relates to other branches of mathematics, and how these operations can be used practically.

The lectures offer students the chance to “make sense” of mathematical knowledge that may have seemed so frightening. By the conclusion of the course, students will have improved their understanding of basic math. They will be able to clear away the mystery (神秘性) of mathematics and face their studies with more confidence than they ever imagined. In addition, they will strengthen their ability to accept new and exciting mathematical challenges.

With a PhD in Mathematics Education from Georgia State University, Dr. Siegel teaches mathematics at Central Arizona College. His courses include various make-up classes and a number of lectures for future primary school teachers.

Peanuts to This
Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”
Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real talk I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice; flip (掷) a coin. Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.
学习啦在线学习网 Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.” The whole world became quite! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?
Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster’s office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my option to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!
8. What did the author’s classmates think about his report?
A. Controversial. B. Ridiculous. C. Boring. D. Puzzling.
9. Why was the author confused about the task?
A. He was unfamiliar with American history.
B. He followed the advice and flipped a coin.
C. He forgot his teacher’s instruction.

学习啦在线学习网 Honey (蜂蜜) from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees’ nest (巢) and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper一a little bird called a honey guide.
学习啦在线学习网 The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax (蜂蜡) in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.
Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.

She said her main essay submitted to Stanford was about how she chose her Chinese name and what that name meant to her.

学习啦在线学习网 Great civilizations dating back to the Egyptian empire, the Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire have all used trade routes as part of their economy. Perhaps the most famous ancient trade route known today was “The Silk Road”. The recent BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) mirrors this in many ways. It’s a way to connect the vast continents of Europe, Africa, and Asia in a similar manner as the ancient Silk Road did for the purpose of trade.
学习啦在线学习网 Trade between all the countries proposed in the BRI is possible today. But the BRI will make trade more efficient through newly built roads, railways, and shipping ports. The proposed infrastructure(基础设施) is through mutual(双方的) agreement, not through threats of military intervention. If a country
学习啦在线学习网 does not want to participate, they can simply refuse. It is their decision.
Could the BRI eventually become sort of an Interstate Highway System for the continents and countries of Europe, Africa, and Asia? Nobody can predict the future but it seems like a possibility. In the near term the BRI seems to consist primarily of railways and shipping lanes but there appears to be highways being built alongside in many cases. Besides, railways can be more efficient ways for people to travel than by motor car. Either way, the BRI would open up more travel and tourism as a result of its primary purpose of trade in the near term.
学习啦在线学习网 One of the most impressive parts of the BRI, in my eyes, is that it aspires(追求) to be a peaceful
expansion between nations of open trade. China is spearheading the project with the assistance of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) ( 亚投行) . The AIIB is also an economic endeavor of financial cooperation among most, if not all, the countries involved with the planning of the BRI.
Opening cooperative trade routes can come at a better time for China and the rest of Asia, Europe, and Africa. The result will be a massive infrastructure program that will cover most of Asia, parts of Europe and parts of Africa, which will enable free trade across these three continents.
学习啦在线学习网 28. What does the underlined word mean in the first paragraph?
A. changes B. reflects C. differs D. separates
29. Which of the following is NOT true about the BRI?
A. The BRI can improve the efficiency of trade.
B. In the near term, the BRI consists mainly of railways and shipping lanes.
学习啦在线学习网 C. The expansion of the BRI is through threats and military forces.
D. Any country can join the BRI if it wants to.
学习啦在线学习网 30. What does the author think of the AIIB?
A. It only offers assistance to China. B. It is a part of the BRI.
C. It is the financial cooperation among few countries. D. China is playing an important part in it.
学习啦在线学习网 31. The attitude of the author towards the BRI is .
A. optimistic B. pessimistic C. objective D. skeptical
D

Text10
Cars are an important part of life in the USA. Without a car, most people feel that they are poor.
There are three reasons the car has become so popular in the USA. First of all, the country is a large one and Americans like to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form of transportation. The second reason is the fact that the USA has never really developed an efficient and inexpensive form of public transportation. Though there is a good system of air service provided, it is too expensive to be used frequently. The third reason is the most important one. The American sense of independence is what really makes cars popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus or a train or even a plane. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time.
However, though cars are so popular in America, the gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. The real solution will have to be a new kind of a car, one that does not use so much gas.
