学习啦在线学习网 No one wants to be caught outside in the rain without an umbrella. These handy objects come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and there are many that can easily fold into a purse or a bag in case of a sudden heavy rain. Just about everyone owns an umbrella, but not many of us give them a second thought. What follows is a brief tribute to an item that most of us take for granted.

学习啦在线学习网 Historians are unsure of where and when exactly umbrellas came into play. Some say Egypt, while others say China. What is for sure is that they’ve been around a very long time. They weren’t intended to protect us from the rain, however. The ancient Greeks and Romans used them as shade from the sun. It was the Roman women who began to oil the cloth of the umbrella to protect it from water.

It wasn’t until the 1600s that European women began to carry umbrellas, mostly as shade from the sun. Sometime in the 1700s, it became popular to carry wood and oilcloth models as protection from the rain. In 1750, an Englishman named Jonah Hanway decided to carry an umbrella everywhere he went. This was unheard of. Only women carried umbrellas. Because of this, many people laughed at him, but at least he was dry. Ignoring the laughter of those around him, Hanway carried his umbrella for 30 years. By the late 1700s, however, it became more acceptable for men to carry “hanways”.

Because they were made of wood, umbrellas were not only expensive, but they were difficult to use. In 1852, Samuel Fox invented the steel kind that we see today. Since then, they’ve evolved. We now have umbrellas for the rain and sun. We use them on the beach, while playing golf, and on our patios (露台) and decks. What would we do without umbrellas?

  21. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

  A. To tell us when umbrellas were invented.

学习啦在线学习网 B. To advise people to have a second thought about umbrellas.

  C. To lead to the topic of the passage.

  D. To tell us the importance of umbrellas in our daily life.

  22. What can we infer from the passage?

  A. Men were not allowed to use umbrellas in the 1700s.

  B. Jonah Hanway was an umbrella salesman.

学习啦在线学习网 C. Wood umbrellas were hard to operate but very cheap.

学习啦在线学习网 D. It was not so strange for men to use umbrellas in the 1800s.

  23. What does the underlined word “evolved” in the last paragraph mean?

  A. Supported. B. Invented. C. Survived. D. Developed.

  24. What is the best title for this passage?

学习啦在线学习网 A. How umbrellas were invented?

  B. The use of umbrellas in ancient times.

  C. Women’s umbrellas in the 1600s.

  D. A brief introduction to the history of umbrellas.

学习啦在线学习网 One day, I took a taxi and the traffic flew smoothly along a narrow street until our taxi was brought to a sudden stop. I curiously looked forward to seeing the obstruction (堵塞). I noticed that in front of the cars, a rather vast crowd gathered in the middle of the street. In fact, people kept emerging from every direction.

I asked my taxi driver if he had seen what had occurred. He said, “A stupid driver has hit a man on a bicycle. The policeman is here to end the argument.”

学习啦在线学习网 Interesting! My taxi driver had obviously sided with the bicyclist, despite the fact that he too was a driver. He continued to explain, “All the people are coming to give their opinions on what happened.” With these words, he put out his head from the window to shout his thoughts on the accident.

A vast crowd of people was gathering at the scene. Some appeared to be passing bicyclists, and some were coming from the shops along the streets. I felt very surprised! It was nearly impossible that these people had all seen the accident, yet they all seemed to take a personal interest in the “justice” of the result. It was shocking that the police officer who was attending the accident seemed interested in the opinions of all those who were watching! What began as a short pause was beginning to look like a long afternoon drama.

学习啦在线学习网 Accidents like this occur every day. Each time something like this happens to me during my travel in this country, I immediately became impatient, so patience is really necessary if you’re planning to visit this country.

学习啦在线学习网 25.The author was most probably in the country when this event happened

  A. visiting his parents B. on business C. traveling D. living

  26. Who should take the responsibility for the accident in the opinion of the author’s taxi driver?

学习啦在线学习网 B. the police officer showed interest in the opinions of the watchers

学习啦在线学习网 C. no one called the hospital or sent the bicyclist to a hospital

  D. the accident later turned into an interesting drama

28.What does the author advise people to do if they want to visit this country?

  A. Never take a taxi. B. Don’t drive on a narrow street.

  C. Have a lot of patience. D. Avoid crowds.

  C

It was late Wednesday night when the frightening phone call reached our home. I remember lying in my bed trying to fall asleep when I heard the phone ring. Interested in finding out who the late caller was, I sat up so that I could hear the phone call better. To my surprise, I heard my mom shout to my dad, “Get the car, Dean! Andrea has been in a car accident.”

学习啦在线学习网 We ran every red light on the way to the hospital and our tires screeched (发出刺耳声) around every corner. We got to the hospital but were not allowed to see her. The next morning, we were allowed to see Andrea. Until today, nobody knows exactly what happened. We only know that the car rolled on its way back from a party. The two boys in the car were killed, and Andrea was thrown out. She was badly injured.

学习啦在线学习网 Over the next two months, I lived more at the hospital than I did at my house. I watched as Andrea worked so hard to gain back everyday motor skills. She never once complained or pitied herself. After two weeks in the ICU and two months of the regular hospital treatment, Andrea came home. She missed several months of school, so it was hard for her to catch up. Andrea had many tasks to finish, and however hard it was, she stuck until the job was done. Though busy dealing with pain and therapy (治疗), she always found time to love and play with me, her little sister.

I’ll never forget the influence that this incident had on my life. I admire my sister. She is perfectly normal now, despite the pins holding her leg in place. I couldn’t ask for a better sister or a hero in my life.

  29. Why did the author listen to her mother answering the phone?

学习啦在线学习网 A. Because she knew that something terrible had happened.

  B. Because she wanted to know who called at such a late time.

  C. Because she was interested in listening to others talking on the phone.

学习啦在线学习网 D. Because she wondered if she was wanted on the phone.

学习啦在线学习网 30. The first sentence in Paragraph Two shows that ______.

学习啦在线学习网 A. the author’s family were very eager to see Andrea

  B. the author’s father wasn’t good at driving

  C. the family liked breaking traffic rules

  D. their house was far from the hospital

  31. During the treatment, Andrea ______.

学习啦在线学习网 A. read a lot of books

  B. stopped playing with the author

  C. didn’t accept anyone’s help

  D. showed her determined spirit

学习啦在线学习网 32. What is the best title of the passage?

  A. A miracle that happened to my sister.

学习啦在线学习网 B. A sudden disaster for my family.

  C. My sister — the hero in my life.

学习啦在线学习网 D. An accident which changed my life.

  D

If people are ill, there is no need to go to see the doctor, because the computer will tell them how to deal with the illness and it can even give them an operation. In 2050, people can take a trip to the moon and Mars freely and easily. Many people have settled there and the traffic jam won’t be seen on the earth any more. People on the earth have already got in touch with some aliens from outer space.

My daughter Kelly is a cautious person. She needs to warm up to situations, and is hesitant to try new things. When with close friends, she becomes a leader who laughs loudly and chants, “Girls rule, boys drool.” But when that comfort zone is not around her, she is shy and nervous.

学习啦在线学习网 This has been challenging for me at times. “Shy” is not a word that I think has ever been used to describe me. But this has been a year of firsts for my girl that has filled her with a new sense of confidence. This year she moved to lap lane in swimming where she was preparing for a swim team. This year she learned to ride a bike without training wheels. And this year she completed her first kids’ triathlon(三项全能).

On Saturday, with a thunderstorm coming soon and my son’s birthday party later in the day, we all went out in the dark of the morning for Kelly to participate in her first triathlon. We practiced transitions from swim to bike to run with her, we got all the equipment she’d need, and we kept talking about the race. But as we waited the two hours for the older kids to finish before her turn, she held my leg a little harder and told me she loved me a few too many times. She was nervous but trying to keep it together.

学习啦在线学习网 And then it was her turn. From the second she jumped into the water, my heart soared. My daughter transformed into the most confident human being I had ever seen. She dominated that swim, crushed that bike ride and ran to the finish with the biggest smile on her face.

I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my entire life. It wasn’t because she did a sport or anything like that. It was because she was afraid of something and conquered that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn’t seen before.

All day I would find myself just looking over at her and smiling. She might be wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I won that day. I won the chance to see my girl shine.

  Shine on, sweet baby.

My grandma whom we all called Nanny was a solid, first-generation, Italian immigrant. She came to this country with her family on a tiny ship during World War I when she was only 8 years old. During the trip she survived stormy seas, little food, and an attack by German U-boat. After getting here, her large family worked hard to build a new life in America. They never had much money but were rich in love.

One day, when I was about 5 or 6 years old, my parents and brothers went on a trip. It was just me and Nanny in the house for the weekend. Nanny seemed so happy to be taking care of me all by herself. She made me a special breakfast that first morning. However, all I could do was to complain about how the food was not how Mom always made it, Nanny quietly put down the plate and went into the living room. I followed a minute later and saw that she had tears in her eyes. It was the first time I had ever seen my strong and proud grandmother cry and I was the one who had caused it.

学习啦在线学习网 I walked over to Nanny, climbed on her lap, and for the first time in my short life I did something else too. I apologized without being told to and asked Nanny to forgive me. She smiled, rubbed my head, and told me I was a good boy even though I didn’t feel like one then.

学习啦在线学习网 An analysis of almost 50 years of competitions—including Eurovision Song Contests and world skating championships—has found that contestants are more likely to win if they are among the last to appear before the judges.

学习啦在线学习网 The study by an American university appears to provide scientific proof that the best man, or woman, does not always win. It found that, on average, the last competitor to appear in the Eurovision Song Contest was more than twice as likely to win as the one who went on first.

The first rounds of figure—skating championships, for which the running order is selected at random, showed more dramatic results. The final skater had a 14 percent chance of victory, making him or her more than four times as likely to win as the first skater.

The study showed a gradual worsening of chances for competitors who appeared earlier in the running order. A contestant who appears first in a contest is two percent less likely to win than one who appears second. A contestant who appears second is two percent less likely to win than one who appears third, and so on.

The findings are published in the March issue of Acta Psychologica, a scientific journal. Robert Hardman, a senior lecturer in psychology at London Metropolitan University who specializes in the science of decision-making, said that the results were interesting. He suggested that the effect was caused by the limitations of the human memory.

“When people make comparison, they aren’t really able to make a lot of fine-grade discrimination. When contestants appear at the beginning of a contest, judges have little to compare them to and are perhaps cautious about the scores they give.” he said.

“Later on, when judges are able to compare the contestants to those that have gone before, they might give more extreme marks because they feel more confident about their judgments.”

学习啦在线学习网 66. Robert Hardman’s words mainly tell about his ______.

学习啦在线学习网 A. explanation for the findings B. own achievement in the research

  C. suggestion to solve the problem D. comments on the findings

  67. The first skater in the first round of figure skating championships had a ______ percent chance of winning.

  A. six B. four C. three D. two

  68. According to the study, the best competitor does not always win possibly because he/she ______.

学习啦在线学习网 A. fails to show his/her very best

  B. is mistakenly put in the running order

学习啦在线学习网 C. meets with unfair judges

  D. appears too early before the judges

学习啦在线学习网 69. What may be a problem with the judges according to the article?

学习啦在线学习网 A. They believe the first is seldom the best.

  B. They can’t remember things well enough.

  C. They don’t really know what is good.

  D. They show favor towards the contestants they like.

学习啦在线学习网 70. What could be the best title for the passage?

  A. A contestant who appears last is sure to win.

  B. Judges have a preference when giving scores.

  C. The best way to come first is to go last.

  D. Judges usually made no comparison in contests.

On my first job as a sports editor for the Montpelier Leader Enterprise(MLE), I didn’t get a lot of fan mail, so many attention was caught by letter on my desk one morning.

When I opened it, I read:“Sweet piece of writing on the Tigers. Keep up the good work.” It was signed by Don Wolfe, the sports editor. Because I was a teenager, his words couldn’t have been more inspiring. I kept it in my drawer until it got old. Whenever I doubted I had the right stuff to be a writer, I would reread Don’s note and walk on air again.

Later, when I got to know him, I learned that Don made a habit of writing a quick, encouraging note to people in all walks of life. “when I made others feel good about themselves,” he told me, “I feel good, too.”

Over the years, I’ve tried to copy Don and write uplifting words, in a world too often cold and unresponsive, such notes bring warmth.

Why are positive note writers in such short supply? My guess is that people who shy away from the practice are too self-conscious. They are afraid they will be misunderstood. Thus, it may cause troubles and problems. And it sounds insincere on the phone. Also, writing takes time; it is far easier to pick up the phone.

学习啦在线学习网 The drawback of phone calls, of course, is that they do not last. A note attaches more importance to our well-wishing. It is a matter of record, and our words can be read more than once, savored and treasured, and they bring strength and love to us.

Today I sent a warm letter to my old boss. I don’t know if it will make his day, but it made mine. As my friend Don Wolfe said, “Making others feel good about themselves makes me feel good too.”

Are you able to tell if people are lying? There is a piece of good news that a technology company is developing a lie detector app for smart phones that could be used by parents, teachers and Internet daters. The app measures blood flow in the face to assess whether or not you are telling the truth. Its developers say that it could be used for Internet daters wanting to see if somebody really is interested in them. Parents could use it on their children to see if they are lying, and teachers could work out which pupils are truthful.

学习啦在线学习网 The app is being developed by Toronto startup NuraLogix and the app is called Transdermal Optical Imaging. The idea is that different human feelings create different facial blood flow patterns that we have no control over. These patterns change if we are telling the truth or telling a lie, using footage(一组镜头) from the smart phone camera, the app will see the changes in skin colour and compare them to standardized results.

学习啦在线学习网 A study finds that anger is connected with more facial blood flow and redness while sadness is connected with less of both.

Kang Lee, who has been researching the field for 20 years, said that the lie detector test will let you find out the truth remotely and secretly. He said: “It could be very useful, for example, for teachers. A lot of our students have math anxiety, but they do not want to tell us because that’s embarrassing.”

学习啦在线学习网 Lee added that the technology would not replace lie detectors used in a court of law. He said: "They want the accuracy to be extremely high, like genetic tests-a one-in-a-million error rate. Our technique won't be able to achieve an extremely high accuracy level, so because of that, I don't think it's useful for the courts. He added that it will be a few years before the dating app is available to consumers.

  34. What is the first paragraph mainly about?

  A. The operation process of the app.

  B. The history of a technology company.

  C. The functions and applications of the app.

  D. The origin and development of the new technology.

学习啦在线学习网 35. What do we know about the app?

学习啦在线学习网 A. Its accuracy is the same as genetic tests.

  B. It can help teachers pick out the honest pupils.

学习啦在线学习网 C. It will help see the structures of human skin.

  D. It has been already on the market for a few years.

  36. What can we learn from the text?

  A. The technology will be applied to the medical field.

  B. The technology will replace lie detectors in the court of law,

  C. Different human feelings have nothing to do with facial blood flow patterns.

学习啦在线学习网 D. Sadness is related to less facial blood flow and redness when compared with anger.

学习啦在线学习网 37. What is the best title for the text?

  A. The Story about Kang Lee B. The Disadvantages of New Technology

  C. Various Smart Phones D. A Developing App for Smart Phones

  C

We know the famous ones — the Thomas Edisons and the Alexander Graham Bells — but what about the less famous inventors? What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield wiper(雨刮器)? Shouldn’t we know who they are?

Joan Mclean thinks so. In fact, Mclean, a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range, feels so strongly about this matter that she’s developed a course on the topic. In addition to learning “who” invented “what”, however, Mclean also likes her students to learn the answers to the “why” and “how” questions. According to Mclean, “When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more motivated to give inventing a try.”

Her students agree. One young man with a patent for an unbreakable umbrella is walking proof of Mclean’ statement. “If I had not heard the story of the windshield wiper’s invention,” said Tommy Lee, a senior physics major, “I never would have dreamed of turning my bad experience during a rainstorm into something so constructive.” Lee is currently negotiating to sell his patent(专利)to an umbrella producer.

So, just what is the story behind the windshield wiper? Well, Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1902 after a visit to New York City. The day was cold and stormy, but Anderson still wanted to see the sights, so she jumped aboard a streetcar. Noticing that the driver was struggling to see through the snow covering the windshield, she found herself wondering why there couldn’t be a built-in device for cleaning the window. Still wondering about this when she returned home to Birmingham, Alabama, Anderson started drafting out solutions. One of her ideas, a lever(操作杆)on the inside of a vehicle that would control an arm on the outside, became the first windshield wiper.

Today we benefit from countless inventions and innovations. It’s hard to imagine driving without Garrett A. Morgan’s traffic light. It’s equally impossible to picture a world without Katherine J. Blodgett’s innovation that makes glass invisible. Can you picture life without clear windows and eyeglasses?

学习啦在线学习网 38. By mentioning “traffic light” and “windshield wiper”, the author indicates that countless inventions are _____________.

  A. beneficial, because their inventors are famous

  B. beneficial, though their inventors are less famous

  C. not useful, because their inventors are less famous

  D. not useful, though their inventors are famous

  39. Professor Joan Mclean’s course aims to ____________.

  A. add colour and variety to students’ campus life

学习啦在线学习网 B. inform students of the windshield wiper’s invention

学习啦在线学习网 C. carry out the requirements by Mountain University

  D. prepare students to try their own invention

  40. Tommy Lee’s invention of the unbreakable umbrella was _________.

  A. not eventually accepted by the umbrella producer

  B. inspired by the story behind the windshield wiper

学习啦在线学习网 C. due to his dream of being caught in a rainstorm

学习啦在线学习网 D. not related to Professor Joan McLean’s lectures

  41. Which of the following can best serve as the title of this passage?

学习啦在线学习网 A. How to Help Students to Sell Their Inventions to Producers?

  B. How to Design a Built-in Device for Cleaning the Window?

  C. Shouldn’t We Know Who Invented the Windshield Wiper?

学习啦在线学习网 D. Shouldn’t We Develop Invention Courses in Universities?

  D

学习啦在线学习网 We live in a time when technology has enabled everyone to be a journalist, yet not everyone has the proper training. Whether out of ignorance or out of a sense of honor, some of the journalism online has done a better job of changing public opinion than showing the whole truth.

Two recent stories are perfect reminders of the difference between the urge to change minds and basic journalism ethics(道德规范).

学习啦在线学习网 “A college kid took some birds from a nearby tree and was sentenced to 10 years in prison,” went a recent online headline from the Chinese Internet. The accompanying vote showed that 85 percent of respondents sided with the student. Some joked that most boys would be guilty of such a crime because everyone had stolen birds when they were children.

学习啦在线学习网 Left out of the original report was the fact that the birds in question were falcons, which are on the nation’s list of protected, endangered species. Birdwatchers also said that it was unlikely Yan Xiaotian, the 21-year-old defendant, had found the 12 birds in one tree. For this particular species, he had to search a much larger area.

学习啦在线学习网 For me, the most important questions are: Did he know it was illegal before he took the birds and did he know that before he sold them?

学习啦在线学习网 Follow-up reporting has found that the evidence showed that Yan knew what he was doing. The only point of uncertainty is the very first time he took the first birds when he could be unaware of their status and value. As a matter of fact, the prosecutor(检察官) started out asking for a light punishment, but took a U-turn when data from Yan’s cell phone clearly showed that he had stolen them.

The punishment, while sounding harsh(残酷的), followed the law almost to the letter. The court has since said it would review the case, a sign of giving in to public pressure.

Let’s look at the second story, which can be read as either “Elderly man had to walk in his shorts for hours in Sanya after his bike was taken by the city’s quasi-police” or “Retired official illegally parked his bike for a swim and made the city apologize and fire a low-paid city management staff member”.

学习啦在线学习网 Both played up different parts of the same story. For me, Bi Guochang’s age and former official title are not relevant to the case. The key is whether he indeed parked his bike illegally and whether proper procedures were being followed by taking it away and making him get it back. Yet the reports focused on the image of an old man walking only in his shorts. He could have phoned his family for backup(支持)or taken a taxi home first before complaining, as most would do in that situation.

Such stories read like badly-written morality tales, with everything in black and white and a simple yes-or-no message. Real life is much more complicated. Reporters have to be neutral and avoid taking sides too early.

学习啦在线学习网 42. Why was Yan Xiaotian sentenced to 10 years in prison?

学习啦在线学习网 A. He took some birds from a nearby tree.

学习啦在线学习网 B. He searched a much larger area for birds.

  C. He illegally took some falcons and sold them.

学习啦在线学习网 D. He took 12 birds without knowing they were falcons.

  43. According to the passage, the writer implied that _________. .

  A. the judges should still follow the law strictly

学习啦在线学习网 B. the punishment was too much for the student

学习啦在线学习网 C. the student didn’t get fair treatment from the judges

  D. the court will resentence the student

  44. The writer mentioned the second story to show that _________. .

  A. the reports focused on the appearance of Bi Guochang rather than the truth

  B. the journalists expressed their sympathy for the elderly person

  C. the local officers didn’t follow proper procedures when they dealt with Bi’s case

  D. the city’s quasi-police were to blame for Bi’s troubles

  45. What is the main idea of the passage?

学习啦在线学习网 A. There is an urgent need to improve current journalism ethics.

学习啦在线学习网 B. Everyone can be a good journalist even without proper training in journalism.

  C. Journalists should remain neutral and have basic ethics.

学习啦在线学习网 D. Journalists can change the public’s opinions.

学习啦在线学习网 49 Reread your notes and try to recall(回忆起)how they were discussed by your professor. Look for a review partner because studying by yourself might eventually result in laziness.

Remember that reviewing allows you to recount the lessons and process them more systematically. Give yourself enough time in studying, and beat the nervousness. 50

学习啦在线学习网 A. Reviewing is useless if your heart is not into it.

  B. It will help you find test-taking techniques.

  C. Preparing for it is even more challenging

  D. After motivating yourself, check how reliable your memory is.

  E. You might find it more comfortable studying in the library than at your own home.

  F. When you know you have studied well, you wouldn’t have to worry about taking the test.

  G. It not only tests your skill in memory recall, but also judges how well you have been studying.
